They come out of the factory box with DOT 3, but do yourself a favor and go DOT 4. Handles heat better and brake fade takes longer to happen under extreme conditions. Just my humble opinion anyways.
 
I recommend 4 also, definitly not 5, 5. 1 is compatible however, it's hygroscopic properties aren't as good as 4. So you have to stay on top of changing it out frequently. I just put Dot 4 in my truck with no problems. 3 and 4 are compatible to mix, do not mix DOT 5 with them however.

BTW, one of the more recent TDR issues had an excellent write up on brakes and brake fluid. It was in the last year, just can't recall the specific issue.
 
I just changed to EGR rear shoes, Stainless lines and Motul 5. 1 brake fulid. I have not had enough time for a complete test but the instant changes is I use less pedal for normal stop and go driving. It is taking a lot less pressure on the pedal for the quicker stops.
