Need help figuring this one out?? I have an 08, 4500 that I use for towing a 40 ft fiver ( just under 20000 lbs). The truck has 53000 mi on it and tow approx 5000 mi a year, the rest is running empty. I've had a Smarty Jr set on tow for about 3 years now with DPF delete and EGR disabled. The truck has run beautifully all this time---great power, and mileage and when towing I always pull in 5th gear with my G56 trans!! The problem started while towing, I got a double chime, the overhead said "SEE DEALER NOW-- SERVICE REQUIRED" and the power was cut 50%!! (I have an Edge Insight which gives me boost, rail pressure, load, etc and these all drop by 1/2) after the chime, every 8 mi exactly it will double chime again and so on. If I pull over cool down and shut the truck down and start it back up the message is gone and the power is back----for 8mi, then over and over again!!! No dash lights and no codes!! It still drives great on the flat as long as you don't demand more than 50% power!!! I have been getting 2 codes ever since I installed the Smarty Jr, one is turbo speed sensor and the other is insufficient EGR air flow (sorry I can't remember the code numbers) turbo speed sensor has been coming up more often(once every few days of driving), the EGR one maybe once a month. I can read and erase with my Edge Insight. By the way once in a while my power comes back before the double chime goes off again???? Please help---I'm worried about hurting my engine and in 5 days I have to drive 400 mi to home!!!!
 
Sounds like turbo problem putting you into limp home mode.

Hello Eagle eye!! It seems electronic to me? Shut the truck off, message is gone and power is perfect, for exactly 8 miles!! Then every 8 miles after that goes back to limp? Did the down load again with the Smarty---went back to stock to clear over head first and then loaded tow mode again. Went exactly 50 miles towing and double chime again and very slowly backed down to 50% power (takes about 35 to 40 sec for power to cut back). If I didn't have the Edge Insight, I'm not sure I would even notice the power reduction, except for real big long hills when I had to drop to 4th gear! (normally on this run I don't need to down shift) any more thoughts???? Than
 
We had a similar problem pulling our fifth wheel. Took it to dealer and they replaced in tank fuel pump and changed fuel filters. So far so good. Hope this helps. Good luck to you.
 
Well, you are doing better than we are. Our 2008 Crew Cab on Saturday left us stranded. No overhead display of regen needed soon, MIL flashing, and overhead shows regen now. Emitted a lot of black smoke and no power than stalled. Left us with absolutely no limp mode. Dealer found DPF and DOC are plugged and all sensors for both (more than 1/2 doz) need replacing and EGR cooler plugged.
They claim no codes held in PCM.

any other ideas about this.

If it is out of warranty do not let them replace the DOC and DPF. They can be cleaned out enough to start the truck and diagnose it by tapping the inlet side on a piece of wood. You can generally knock out enough soot to get it running. They can also be washed out, outlet to inlet with water as long as you properly dispose of the soot.
If they balk at that have them pull them off and you take them home and clean them.
Also if you replace before diagnosing they just plug the new ones.
 
Call who ever you bought your smarty from.they should be able to help you with this.You have no dpf to plug it must be a programming issue
