Dowel pin

I tried to adjust my valves the other day and gave up because I could not get the timing pin to engage tha gear. It would push in a little but I could never find the right spot to get it to "lock" in the right hole to find TDC. The dealership said that they use a small pry bar to put more pressure on it than just pushing it with your finger. I must have turned the motor around a dozen times and eventually just gave up. I there an easier way to find TDC?
