Bleeding pump

well the beast quit on me this morning early going down the interstate... had it towed to the dealer but sure do not trust them. . running about 65 it sputtered a few times and smoked big time and just quit... tried to crank several times and nothing... it tries to start but runs like on one cylinder and smokes really big time... . checked all the intercooler connections and they are ok... no water in fuel filter and no fuel leakage that can be seen... does it sound like the lift pump... i changed the overflow valve about a month ago and it just did not seem to crank the same but its probably my imagination... and suggestions would be great... i am waiting for the dealer to call so i can go down there... not good.....

I sounds like it could be the lift pump... did you try pushing on the hand pump thing? you could take the fuel filter off and pump by hand and if no fuel then it would seem even more likely the lift pump... Other than that... maybe a clogged fuel pick-up in the tank, dont know why that would make it smoke bad as it died.

It's possible the gear on the front of your P7100 slipped and you are totally mistimed. This can and does happen. Lot of smoke sounds like fuel at the wrong time not lack of fuel from the lift pump. The piston lift pump in a 12 valve usually doesn't just quit, it slowly dies or the check valves start to leak causing hard starting from loss of prime. Thought it might be the KDP but I see you fixed that.

dieselnerd... the KDP was contained some time ago... it has run fine till now... the timing has seemed to be ok, but who knows... i hate being at the mercy of the dealer... not good... thanks again

Its not too often a 12 valve leaves you walkin. :( I'm interested to see just what happened to yours. I had my shutdown solenoid crap out,but it just caused an intermittent low power problem. Not a total shutdown. I had my overflow valve spring break. Not a big difference in power. Had my lift pump start leaking ,but pumping fine. Full power. Ran out of #2 once. Sputtered, smoked (white) and quit... . I was walkin:{Good thing I wasnt airborne... I still havent fixed that fuel gauge yet. Good luck with the dealer. Hope its something simple.

pumperdude... . you know my guage is gone too and i think i should think if i was out of fuel... damn i cannot rember the miles on the trip meter(how i keep up when it time to fill up)... jezzz i better check that... thanks... man i might get to feel stupid before the days out... .

well what to say... first let me thank those who replied for it gives a great sense of assurance from your fellow members... and thanks to pumperdude for making me suck up and say to myself could it really be that i was out of fuel. but yes i am very embarrassed to say that i was out of fuel and after many primer pushes on the little rubber boot the brut fired up and ran like always. you see my fuel guage like many others has been out for awhile and i have been using the trip meter to keep tabs on fuel levels... well i plain forgot that the last fillup was not a total fillup but only partial and when she sputtered and smoked yesterday i looked at the trip meter and said to myself it cannot be out of fuel on only this many miles, not realizing at the time the last fillup was a partial fillup... . talk about an old man feeling humiliated and embarrassed to the bone... . i take back all those things i said about cummins and the beast ... again thanks for the replies and i am glad it was not a serious situation... it sure does smoke though when out of fuel... . now i am going to go and put my head back in that hole in the sand... thanks all

Glad to hear it's okay..... !

I was hoping it was something simple... . as I didn't want to be in a similar situation someday... .

At least you admitted your boo-boo, some guys/gals would deny it... .

Hey Dustoff---Lighten Up !

Glad that was all it was. I bet it won't happen again. :D :D We have all made mistakes and I seem to repeat mine.

Well we can add another item to the "same symptoms List".

Glad it was not a costly problem like injector pump, transfer pump or injectors, a tank full of fuel is a lot cheaper.

Make you feel better I put on a new fuel pump (mechanical ) on a ford van with dual tanks. The real problem was the electric valve(fuse was blown) didn't switch my tanks. My gauge read full but the tank that was actully being use was empty. Oo.

Mmmmmm. Crow. :D

Seriously, I'm glad there wasn't anything wrong with the truck.

Reminds me of the last time I was in Madison. It was -5 or -10. Truck cranked a long time before starting. Ran OK 'til we got on the highway, then just slowly quit. After a tow and warming up in the shop, it turns out I simply had a load of #2 that gelled. Duh!

Worse yet, I had a couple cans of anti-gel in the truck with me. Never occurred to me to actually *use* it. Doh!

Perhaps it was the excitement of heading up to Eagle River for the AMA Motorcycle Ice Races? Nah. It was nothing more than a senior moment. :)

At least I'll now recognize the effects of fuel gelling.

Hey man don't be hard on yourself.

This really boils down to crappy, cheap fuel level sender design! Anyone at Dodge listening? Of course not.

You shouldn't have to log gallons & miles to figure out when your're about to run out.

Be happy it wasn't something $$$ like a KDP. Cummins you listening? Of course not. Close your ears and deny, deny, deny.
