Just like that. I'd been hearing a 'clunk' after shifting ever now and then and was going to check it out. So after trying to force it into a gear for about 10 minutes I called a tow truck. Two hours later, no tow truck, I try getting it into a gear again. After some horrific grinding it went into 4th ... previously it wouldn't even grind -- it was like the gears weren't even in the box any more! So anyways... into 4th then drove it the the transmission shop. Never took it out of 4th on the way -- major clutch smoking. Didn't know if I could get it back into gear again. So after I'm at the shop I figure what the heck and start shifting. Shifts smooth as can be EXCEPT into 4th -- where it grinds and makes a horrible racket going into gear. Other then that horrible gnashing of teeth into 4th it drives fine. Any ideas?

Mark, I really don't know much about this, but here goes. Could you have broken a syncronizer ring causing the inability to engage the gears(gear)? Obviously just a thought!!!
