BSchwarzli said it best in his first couple words. Regardless if you will do smog checks up there or not, removing that component(s) is illegal. You will face major fines if you take it off. Voiding the warranty... . that will happen too. It can be done, and if done correctly, you will find that it is smooth. But keeping up with the left wing (not trying to start anything here gentlemen), you might see inspections sooner or later up there. I would keep it on and wait. As with everything and time, sooner or later, there will be add ons you can put on for better performance. IMO.

How often do most of the trucks "regen"? Is this once a month kind of thing or is this a once every 6 months? I assume it depends on how much driving, pulling, and idleing your truck does. How does the Regen work and how long does it take?

I have read the actual design parameters written somewhere by a knowledgeable person but unfortunately don't remember exactly what was written.

I think the time between regeneration cycles depends on how the truck is operated and how much soot builds up but the normal time between cycles is a relatively small number measured in thousands of seconds.

I think it is reasonable to say that regeneration probably occurs every few hundred miles under normal operation. Cummins intentionally designed the system so that it is invisible to the driver. You won't know when it occurs unless you install gauges.

So Alaska isnt ever going to be doing smog inspections?

I guess it's easy to put it all back on (emissions crap).

If the EPA is doing it in Colorado im sure it's coming to alaska!

Mac:cool:

Actually, AK is doing smog inspections, Anchorage area does it, Fairbanks just stopped last year. FYI, AK is bigger than most people think, 2 1/2 times the size of texas, with less roads than the state of Rhode Island. Also, for land size, and current population, 1 person per square mile.

Who ever said the TDR isn't educational? :D

My cab and chassis has been fine with no EPA caused CEL's or soot issues but now has 96k on the odometer and will soon be out of warranty. When it comes time to replace the very expensive DPF simply to satisfy some twinkle-toed lib former tree hugger who is now an executive in the EPA or current administration it will be a tough decision.

Harvey, I would think twice about removing the emissions stuff. Do a search on "Texas Emissions Reduction Plan (TERP), it appears even your great state is having to conform, and how did you get up to 98,000 miles, last I saw a few months back you were 83,000.

I'll google search the subject line you suggested. I live in west Texas in a rural county with very low population density, lots of wide open space, and consistent winds. The only pollution we have is cotton farmers spraying herbicides during growing season and the cotton dust in the air when the cotton gins are running.

Next week when they are sworn in we'll have a mostly conservative Republican super majority in the TX house, a majority in the TX senate, a Republican governor and all state wide office holders are Republican. TX is currently suing the nobama administration to void the destructive socialist healthcare fraud. TX does have basic smog equipment checks in some of the large population centers like Houston, Dallas, San Antonio but I think the inspections are minimal and not exhaust sniffers. I'm not very worried about nobama's epa reaching me in west Texas.

I don't really like the idea of violating emissions laws and risking a smog check when pulling my fifthwheel in one of the socialist states but neither do I want to spend $2500 or more for a replacement DPF when mine is full.

I've taken a number of trips recently. Wife and I made three weekend trips down to central Texas for entertainment events back in late summer, I made a trip to Beckley, WV just after Thanksgiving to pick up an enclosed car hauler trailer filled with his new toys for my son-in-law, and wife and I just returned from a trip to travel the Natchez Trace Parkway then up into KY and back. Mileage is a little over 96k now. My miles add up even without trips. A routine trip into Lubbock for healthcare appointments or shopping results in a 120 mile roundtrip.
