I have 53K miles on my 08. The warning keeps appearing on a regular basis that the DPF is 80% full. The last time it come on I had driven 175 miles since the last regen. 100 of the 175 miles were on the interstate. The last 20 miles of the 175 miles were town driving and the truck never warmed up. It has now just come on saying DPF is 80% full. Is there something wrong here? It seams rather soon for the DPF to fill up.

If you don't have an aftermarket air filter you need to get it in before it soots up everything. Sounds like you have a sensor problem or it really is building lots of soot.

If you have an AM filter, swap back to stock box and filter and see if it changes anything. Don't let it go too long.

Just a thought and a little experience not with these trucks but with the Class 8 size. When they first came out with the DPF on the trucks THEY DID NOT LIKE CITY DRIVING. The trucks we had at work did a bunch of city driving and plugged up fast. The truck that my partner and I were on was assigned to commercial accounts and did more driving on the Hwy for longer distances. Our truck seem to not have the same problems as the city trucks for obvious reasons. Could this not be the same thing?

What exactly does an aftermarket air filter have to do with the DPF? Sounds like he's just not running the truck hard enough or has a bag EGR, or disconnected EGR.

Has the truck hit 90-100% yet? Anything about "Performance Reduced"? Any black smoke on startup?

6. 7 engines do not like aftermarket air filters, especially those that alter or remove the stock box. The Mass Airflow Sensor gets confused and it can cause all kinds of soot without throwing a code.
If it has a late flash, it does not have to be driven hard for a regen to occur. Driving it normally at a steady speed will usually do the trick.

My local UPS Driver had a Brown Box Truck with a Cummins in it, He blew turbo at 365,000 miles, things just happen, they gave him a gas truck for a loaner, his wa a 2001, he said in 2010 they received a bunch of 6. 7 trucks, and had a lot of problems with DPF's, he said they did some re flash and a couple of other changes, they now and have been for a couple years doing just fine. This new emission stuff had some growing pains it appears

The J35 flash in 2008 fixed most every DPF related issue. Those that exist now are due to people breaking/disconnecting their EGR, idling for hours or driving to/from the Mall and not allowing the truck to finish a full REGEN.

Im sure it has FIL's truck had to go back for some kind of flash thing that I nor he understands. His is all hwy miles and has had no problems with it so far. I just dont like the clutch set up it feels to wimpy to me. But after quite a few years of big tucks they all do.

Cummins has listed a full page of Dtc's

They know are tripped by altering air flow

Into the 6. 7

With the 6. 7 in my experience everything

On it has to be working correctly to keep

The system happy

The j-35 was not magic, but a good start.

There have been more refinements since then

I guess my real question is simply put is this. Is it possible to plug up a DPF 80% full in 50 miles of city stop and go and never warm up?

I imagine you'll get a 90% then "see dealer" pretty quick on the OHD in those 50 miles of stop and go city driving, when it's at 80% full message. So I would say yes, it will plug. The truck needs to get up to speed and not interrupted at that point to complete a regen. You need to keep the exhaust hot to complete the regen.

Bob can chime in again and explain it better than me, but in a nutshell what I wrote.

The J-35 was my last flash almost two years ago. To my knowledge that was the last flash for the 2007. 5-2009MY trucks. Was there an additional flash that came out since then?

I have so few issues with all my 07-09 customers now I don't keep track of the #s anymore. Nothing major just refinements now.

A common misconception is that the j35 software is only one #.

Depends on when it was done as to the # if you were to come in today it would not be the same as on the original date. You will always get the latest available.

Think of it as a smarty bought 5 years ago would not recognize a K01 recall done this week
