If the DPF was part of the emission system, it would have to be covered under the 100K Federal emissions warr. , would it not? Not the 50K that Chrysler has in their book. If the DPF is not part of the emission system, then the vehicle owner can do what he/she wants to with the DPF and not hurt 'big brothers', or anyone else's feelings. Right?

Interesting... I wonder how they're getting around that?

I don't have my book in front of me so I can't comment on the 50k... but the Federal warranty is 80k (http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/warr95fs.txt and Information on Manufacturers emissions Warranties for 1995 Newer Cars and Trucks | On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) | US EPA) and the DPF is part of the emissions system - w/o it the vehicle would not pass on particulate matter. So, I have always assumed that it was/is covered under the 8 year/80k.

There are better things to argue about... . an example... .

What is the fine for not having a DPF when a particulate test is done at your state level when you go to re-new your tabs...

Funny jeleg should ask about the fine for no DPF. While at Palm Springs Thousand Trails I talked to a man who removed his DPF & was stoped by the CHP who in turn called the Feds. In all it cost him over $5000. 00 in fines towing & storage + he kissed his engine warranty goodbye. Before he could drive it again he had to have it towed to a Dodge dealer & had to have all the DPF replaced. He told me that he didn't want to say what that cost. He asked the CHP officer why he stopped him & his answer was for as new a truck as his was it put out to much smoke when he increased his speed. I do know I did see the ticket he got & the reciept's for the fines & towing. He also said that the CHP is looking for this as they know people are doing this to their trucks. So I guess it is beware.

In a way its sort of good to see some enforcement out there. If we are supposed to buy into the big picture of leaving a better world for our children, it's not going to happen with DPF deletes, but with better DPF technology, no matter how much fun it may be to run a 5"straight:-laf

Forgot to add that as far as I'm concerned, we've already paid for a lifetime of DPFs buy buying the diesel option on our trucks. There should be some serious legislative framework in place to protect the consumer from expensive repairs on non-elective emissions components when we've already paid our higher price for the truck.

Today for the first time in history the two largest populated countries are putting their people in cars because of progress... . their demand as a first time car owner is driving the price of crude oil... the majority of these cars have nothing in relationship to the emission controls in the US and Europe... I'm guessing that one hundred miles in one of our cars and trucks puts less green house gases in the air than 1 mile in China or India...

You should see the smoke from their 2 cycle engines in India and the trucks in both India and China... . they have got to be at least 100 times worse... ...

But HEY we are the worlds richest people so we can pay... pay... pay.....

With the emission changes... . you can expect the state programs to change their enforcement... or loose Federal Road tax dollars...

California!

Was the person that got the ticket registered in California or some other state. Mine puts out a little smoke but nothing like I have sean with 06 and down trucks. I think the variable turbos spool so fast all you will get is one puff and it will be gone. If you are on 5 or race with the juice with att. thats a hole new game.

Cost of fines and etc... What would a class action suit cost Chrysler for not warranting the 'emissions' for the required 80K?

Ron

I think we can be pretty confident that Chrysler knew the law and was in compliance with it when they established the warranties and printed the warranty booklets.

Let me be the first to stand up and say never assume that there is compliance in place. In fact, they may be betting that a class action suit would never develop. At the end of the day, they are profit driven, which means calculating their risks and pay-offs and limiting their liabilities to the point where they can develop a projected profit. You can be that they would be very good at that.

While driving to NAPA a few months back the CHP had a temporary traffic stop set up on a city street near I-5 in San Diego. The reason? Just like their sobriety check points this was an emissions equipment compliance checkpoint. A NAPA employee said it had been there for several days and that he saw several late model diesel pickups get cited and then towed from the check point. There were NO "Fix-It" tickets issued. It was a mandatory tow and impound along with a citation for emission control removal violations. Ouch! What about a ticket and 14 days to make it right? They are playing hardball!

Why offer a ticket to make it right when those who removed the emissions stuff did so knowingly. It's not like it fell off on its own, or for example a component was broken and needed to be repaired or replaced, its plumb out gone and done so deliberetly. If a person pulls all the emissions stuff off their truck and get caught, chances are they have no one to blame but them self, they knew it was illegal and took the risk / bet of not getting caught or not caring if they did get caught. Save the warnings for those that could actually benefit from it. Everybody wants the law to work for them without having to abide by it themselves. It's our tax dollars working there, may as well make it work for us. Just my . 02:cool:

YUP - the "You play, YOU PAY" concept is hard for some to accept, especially in these latter-day times of never accepting personal responsibility, when there's someone ELSE we can blame... ;):-laf:-laf
