I have had my truck now for just over 2 years, the tailpipe has been sooty for as long as I can remember. Based on the 2nd generation I used to own, I thought this was normal until an acquaintance told me otherwise. I took it into the local Chrysler dealer while it was still under warranty and as there were no codes Chrysler would not do anything to correct the situation.

About 2 months ago the CEL came on and I checked the code which is P2453, Diesel Particulate Filter Pressure Sensor A circuit performance. This would indicate that the filter is cracked. My questions are, could there be something else other than a cracked filter and is it still safe to drive in this condition. I have probably done about 1500 miles with this condition and there are no driveability issues with the truck.

Someone more knowledgable with Chrysler codes can chime in but to me circuit performance probably indicates a problem with the sensor itself or the wiring.

Soot in the tailpipe is a sign of a cracked DPF. It is not the fault of the DPF, it is caused by excessive heat upstream. Cause is generally fuel contamination causing injectors to stick, or any of the sensors being dirty/bad fooling the ECM into adding more fuel to the regeneration that is not needed. The cause HAS to be repaired before bolting in a new $2k DPF.

Thank you Sag2 for your comments. When I take the truck to my dealership will they know enough to look for the cause or just replace the defective part?

Thanks, Richard

Thanks again sag2. With your input I will be able to ask the right questions if the dealer just wants to go ahead and replace the dpf without checking further.

What warranty are you referring to, the 07. 5 CTD should be out of warranty by now? Chrysler is glad to see these engines out of warranty, 07. 5 through early 09 productions were troublesome, (referring to the DPF and emissions) and they just want them to go away, keep good documentation if they deny the warranty after its up. If you had soot in your exhaust since you owned it, is it possible it was deleted?

The truck came with an extended warranty which expired June 2012. This past June the CEL came on as noted above. I do not think the 8/80 is applicable to the Canadian market but I will mention it when I go to the dealership again. Is it still ok to drive the truck with this condition? I have done about 1500 miles since the light first came on.

Thanks for your comments,
Richard

If all you have is cracked DPF, it will not damage anything further if you need to drive it a bit longer. Technically it is illegal to have it blowing soot knowingly.
