Why is it that people refuse to believe something even if they experience it themselves? First off, I live in New Mexico, the land of the die hard Ford fan. Imagine my friends surprise when I ordered my new Dodge 2500 HO instead of the latest and greatest Ford 6. 0L. They still enjoy every opportunity they get to give me grief about my decision. "Its still a Dodge," "No real backseat," "Looks dumb," "Beds too short. " Whatever. They tell me how the Ford beats the Dodge in EVERY test ever done in EVERY magazine they have read. Two of my friends have the new 6. 0L. One is a one ton dually the other a short bed 3/4 ton. Well, yesterday 7 of us went to lunch, half in my truck the rest in the 3/4 ton 6. 0L. After lunch I decided to take the opportunity to put the trucks to the test. We drag raced twice, (traffic got heavy) and both times I blew his doors! I was at least 3 truck lengths before he started to keep up. At about 55-60 mph he was gaining slightly but not by much. I couldn’t do a full 1/4 mile so don't know if he would have caught up or not. I'll get a rematch at a later date. Granted his truck has the dreaded dead pedal, cold start and idle fluctuation problems but that is a whole other post. Maybe a good running 6. 0L would have beat me, but there wasn’t one available this day. Well, to make a long story short, after the drag race one friend says, "Wow that truck was peppy!" Funny thing was that he was talking about the 6. 0L. By the way, did I forget to mention I was ahead by at least 3, count them 1-2-3 truck lengths? Anyway, some people will never learn no matter what. Just thought I would share. By the way, great site for info and a good bunch of folks. Don’t post much if at all, probably because I am new to the diesel truck world. Anyway, thanks for reading.
 
I understand the 6. 0 is way faster than the Cummins. At least 2 or 3/10 of a second in the 1/4. :rolleyes:

But finding one that runs is rare. Finding one that runs right is... not likely. Let them live in denial if it makes them happy!:D
 
Glad to hear your story! You have to feel bad for the ford boys. They talk alot but they usual have hard time backing up. There are a few exception. I just put stacks and bulldog tourqe boxs on my 03 dodge. That thing runs!If you want to see my truck go to www. supersportsman.com/rhino.htm
 
I often wonder why people spend $40K on a 7,000 lb vehicle in order to achieve a bone stock quarter of a second or a 1-2 truck length advantage in a race . like that is the reason we buy a 4WD HD truck? so what if the next guy can pull a 15,000 lb trailer and beat you by one rig length if his engine craps out well before 100,000 miles? if you want to race a stock pickup, get the new one with the Viper engine in it. Don't get me wrong I like my truck to win, even marginaly. I can even resonate with the perceived confirmation that I made a good choice. I've even stomped on it a few times myself when someone lines up next to me. However, I'd rather have an engine with a statistically valid 350,000 average miles between rebuilds, and proven reliability in higher (than the dodge truck) HP commercial applications, and a towing workhorse. Trouble is, you can't express that while racing off the line ;) I'm not interested in a breakable hot rod that happens to burn #2 diesel but doesn't go the distance. you gotta know that PSD buyers made their decision on something other than researched product reliabilty. must not have even been an issue.



to answer the question of belief and experience, I think people validate or even make their purchase decisions based on different things -- instant gratification and pure brand loyalty being at the top.

Your racing results confirm what I've seen on dyno runs. 6. 0's are down 10+ h. p. and more than 70 ft lbs compared to big Cummins.
 
I wouldn't be afraid to race a 6. 0!



But, more importantly ... as was mentioned by Leno ... . this is a tried and true design. Even if the 6. 0 is faster in the 1/4 ... ..... it'll never out tow the Cummins. Remember the 300 6 that Ford made??? Big pistons, long stroke, low rev, plenty of towing torque.

We technically thats not true. There are devices that can measure HP directly, but you are right that HP is a calculated value and dependant only on torque and rpm. this really allows the specsmanship game to go wild -- one engine with the same torque (force) that can develop this torqe at 5% greater rpm, will have 5% more HP.
 
that device is a dyno and can be set to read what you want!



I've put my foot on an 800HP alcohol injected sprint motor, and a 400HP diesel ... ... ... ..... by the time the diesel is out of breath, the alky motor is thinking about waking up!



Torque is the true measure of power, can you imagine an I6 Cummins still pulling at 8500RPM?

true in perception but in reality the dyno measures one parameter directly and calculates the other.

yup. Just to be technically correct, torque is equivalent to 'force' and not 'power' as the latter (power) is a quantity that contains distance and rate information.

Ten months after it rolled out a diesel engine for heavy-duty pickups, Ford Motor Co. faces a chorus of quality complaints from owners who are among the company's most loyal customers.



The 6-liter Power Stroke diesel V8, built by a unit of Navistar for Ford, commands nearly half the U. S. market for diesel pickups. But a raft of problems and repeat trips to dealerships for repairs has left some owners upset, threatening Ford's efforts to rebuild a reputation for quality vehicles.



"You don't know when the truck's going to go or not," said Matt Steffen, a F-250 Power Stroke owner in Florida. "You can step on the gas one day and it will go really well, and the next day you step on the gas and it won't go at all. "



Soon after the new engines went on sale in November in heavy-duty Ford pickups and the Ford Excursion sport-utility vehicle, owners started reporting problems. Among the costliest is diesel fuel seeping into the engine's oil supply in amounts large enough to ruin the engine.



Other complaints included engines that ran roughly or stalled, lack of power at low speeds and harsh shifts. The complaints caused Ford to announce a recall of the Power Stroke in April to reprogram the engine's computer controls and replace a fuel injection sensor.



Even after the recall, several owners continued to have problems. After promising fixes in April, Ford now contends the problems should be solved soon, and that only a small fraction of Power Stroke owners have had any trouble.



Ford has even taken the step of buying back an undisclosed number of trucks to appease angry customers, a rare move automakers usually don't make unless forced by state law.



"We're sorry that it happened," Roman Krygier, Ford's group vice president for manufacturing and quality, said. "We think those problems are behind us. "







THANK THE LORD I HAVE A CUMMINS and don't have to make excuses for my truck!!!!

I'm a confirmed adrenaline/endorphine* junkie. And I drink beer and eat snuff on occasion too. I'm in it for the FUN. (not the chicks and money!)

*my other "hobby" is mountain bike racing. It hurts a lot, until the ride is over. ;)
 
You should have seen the look on this kids face !!



Saturday morning I was heading to camp with 2 horses in my 3 horse slant load. We were only staying 1 night so I wasn't load to capacity.



Anyway, I pulled up to a light behind a trash truck and a chevy p/u directly in front of me getting ready to head up the entrance ramp to the freeway.



This chevy looked like his dad probably gave it to him and he stuck some stickers in the rear window and added dual exhaust to make a race truck out of it.



We were heading up the ramp and I could see that he was getting anxious behind the slow moving trash truck so I was ready for him when he got on the pipes. We both jumped to the left lane and the race was on, lol.



He never pulled me more than 2 or 3 trucks :D



As he slowed and got into the right lane to hit the next exit (maybe 2 miles), I blew by him and looked over with a cheesey grin and he looked back with real mixed up look :-laf



disbelief, amazed, discouraged ... ... ..... I can't quite describe it but it was a look worth a million bucks!
