Cummins V/S Duramax

Went last weekend to the Rodeo du Camions (french for truck rodeo) in Quebec. What an event!! For two days its show and shine, drag races and the hole town's a party. They set up a drag track in town (up hill of course) and race both bobtail and with a full load of lumber. All of these trucks are daily drivers and these guys run em HARD. Check it out at http://www.municipalite.notre-dame-du-nord.qc.ca/en/index.html. I took lots of pics, I'll post a few as soon as I figure out how.

These trucks were just ones that guys drove up for the weekend, not show and shine or racing. Very well organised event, even provide lots of camping and truck parking.

Sorry, pics are gonna have to wait till I get this figured out. Right now they're 650K tif images, need to change em.

By far not the fanciest trucks, but one of my favourite pics. Got both the Mack and the Freightliner cabover in the same race. I like the old cabovers.

Guy on right must have been the local hero. Everytime he came out the entire crowd went nuts. Had a rug up Detroit, sounded like few hundred chainsaws going. They'd sit, wound right up at the lights and let em go in a big gear, just about snuff it out, then smoke like hell and they'd be gone. Very fast. Buddy on the left would always wind it up and lay a few strips for the crowd.

Pics aren't as clear as I'd hoped (sorry), had too shrink em down to post.

Anybody have pics of that jet engine powered Peterbilt?, i know its not a diesel, but it looks cool as hell and is the fastest truck on earth they said

yep

I seen the truck in '93 at an airshow in Abbotsford BC, CRAZY! Took lots of pics, if I can find them I'll scan em and post em. May take a bit, I've moved a few times since and their packed up somewhere.

There were *2* jet powered big rigs at the Orlando Florida Speedway track a few years back - absolutely the most impressive drag setups I've EVER witnessed! Those things laid out a HUGE cloud of fire, smoke and vapor that enveloped the whole staging area behind them - including a couple of hundred spectators who "wanted a closer look"... :D Wonder most of them didn't get barbequed... Those rigs blasted your eardrums no matter HOW much you tried to plug your ears!

Just think what a fantastic show they could put on at a truck pull if they could convert thrust into traction... ;) :D

oh but it is a diesel

EMD, the Shockwave truck is a tri-jet powered Conventional tractor. Some would think that it has nothing to do with diesel, but they burn diesel fuel because it is less volatile. I have spoken with Les Shockley at the Englishtown, NJ Diesel Nationals a few times, then watched him break 277 mph in the quarter mile. He was not allowed back to the track for a couple years, and last year was allowed back, but they could only display the 1/8 mile time on the board due to track insurance problems. He still made a full pass, but nobody got to see how fast he really went. He was over 180 mph in the 1/8. Bob Motz's single jet Kenworth had a chute burn up on him and just barely stopped it in time.

The Shockwave was at the Cummins Big Rig Nationals at Maryland International Raceway, Budds Creek, Maryland, this past April. It was great to watch it, totally mind-blowing speed and power.

And then there's the quad-turbo Detroit Diesel Allison V-12 powered big rigs owned by Smith Transport that can run 11 to 12 second 1/4 miles... Same trucks were at Thunder in Muncie. Always a treat to watch them run !
