Gentleman this may seem a little elementary to you seasoned vets, but this is my first six speed. I was under the 05 checking fluid levels and I can't seem to find a place to drain the old 56 Honey!!. Do you pull one or both of the PTO covers or what??. Just what is the normal procedure for serviceing this beast anyway??. Any help please.

05 3500 4X4 Laramie DRW 325/610 4:10's new on 10/30/04.

Sold 99 3500 4X4 SLT Laramie ATS Trans TC,VB,Comander, Edge AFE Auto Meter I loved that thing but guess what?? yep 53 block :{

I just parked the truck on a slight side to side incline and pulled the one side cover that was on the low side to drain it.

The bottom-middle bolt on the drivers-side PTO cover is a drain. It's a true drain... there's a passage behind it that extends into the bottom of the case. No need to remove the PTO covers if you don't want.

it's just bad when you try to grab that magnet and end up pushing it towards the pass side and can't reach it by hand :( i had to make a little tool to grab it to pull it back to where i could reach it.

What is the torque (not horse power as in other thread going on at this time) for the drain bolt. I am trying to make an on-line database of torque settings for normal service bolts on our trucks.

Actually, the 2003 service manual specifies 1. 25 Hp for the drain bolt. :-laf

Seriously, the manual says 30 ft-lb.

Here's the figure from the service manual that shows the drain bolt, for anyone who's still unclear what we're talking about.

Alright gentlemen thanks for the help. On the subject of the magnet is it on the cover? and if so is there one on each side (each PTO cover?), or is it just inside the transmission housing?. I guess the way to go is to drain the oil using the bottom middle bolt, then once the oil has finished draining then remove the cover(s) to clean the magnet. Is there a reuseable gasket or is it silicone?

Please confirm that it's the driver's side PTO cover shown on the photo. Also, I assume that the cap behind the cover on the drive's side is the fill hole. Please confim this also. Again, a torque setting for this cap would be usefull.

Ken,

Can't confirm it's only on the drivers side. I think the drain is on both sides, but since I've only ever drained from the drivers side I don't recall whether there's also one on the passenger side. The cap you refer to is indeed the fill hole. It's a 17mm hex head. Torque spec is 22 ft-lb.

I've never had the PTO cover off to drain or service the transmission - so never actually seen that magnet - how is it secured inside the transmission, or is it simply held (hopefully!) in place by magnetism? :confused: :confused:

The magnet just sits in the bottom of the transmission. Rest assurred, it's strong enough to remain right where the factory put it! When I had my PTO covers off I almost missed the magnet altogether because it's very thin and easy to mistake for a cast-in part of the case.

HMMmmm - I have heard a few fellas here comment on the garbage buildup they found on that magnet - wonder if that is typical, or only in random trannies?

Also wonder if you must remove BOTH PTO covers to properly clean out the bottom of the transmission case and magnet - or will one do?

Sorta hate to chance any more potential cover leakage than absolutely necessary... :eek: :eek:
