Here's a tid bit of info on the factory fill oil in the 6 speed. I just bought 2 quarts from the dealership (10. 65 ea. ) and the bottle states for use in NV3500 Only. Rest assured it is the correct stuff for our beloved 5600's, DC Part# 4874464, Spec MS9224. Maybe they have some bottles that say 5600 on them, but the ones I bought didn't.

Thanks, TDR !

Thanks to all the info on this {somewhat old} thread (yes, the search button is your friend), I successfully changed the fluid in the ol' NV5600 this afternoon..... the task was a piece of cake..... special thanks to klenger (info about Pennzoil) and rbattelle (visual aids) for their contributions. I purchased the Pennzoil Synchromesh at an O'Reilley's Auto Parts store for $4. 59 per quart plus tax. After my 57 mile commute from work to home today, the fluid was a tad hot and drained nicely. I was lazy (just removed the single PTO drain bolt) and re-filled. This website is great.

Threads like this are examples of how great the TDR can be and the wealth of information our membership and the search button can provide. I will add my thanks to the folks like Ken, Gary, Ryan and many more for taking the time to help out the masses.

Think I will crawl under my truck in the morning and take a look.

I have another piece of advice with regard to this changeout that I recently learned. You might consider putting a little bit of RTV on the threads of that bottom bolt before reinserting it. Mine has a very tiny leak (too tiny to justify pulling and draining again before the next scheduled change, but leaks still bother me).

Considering how wonderfully simple this fluid is to change, why in the world did Dodge decide NOT to recommend any change interval?

Great timing - I bought the fluid yesterday and am planning on doing this next weekend. How much did you get out?

I'm on the fence about taking the cover off and cleaning the magnet or just draining the fluid through the bottom bolt.

Belated thanks Bert! I picked up some at Dodge today and had the exact same question!

I used four quarts..... the forth quart may have had 1/4" or so remianing in the bottom after re-filling. No leaks at the fill plug or bottom PTO cover bolt after the service.

It has been recommended, here, that you first loosen the fill plug before draining the gear oil, just in case you can't get the fill plug out.

Also, I found that you can't get to the bottom of the trans. case, to clean the magnet, from the passenger side PTO cover. You have much better access from the drivers side cover.

While you are under the truck, you may want to consider adding a "Manual Transmission Filter" from Geno's Garage. About $30. 00 with one filter & $40. 00 with a spare filter and gaskets. Not a bad price.

I bought mine from Quad 4X4 (TDR advertiser) & it came with the spare filter & gaskets and a VCR tape showing you how to do the job. Delivered price was around $61. 00. I'd never done one of these, before, and I thought the tape might be beneficial. Actually, the job is so simple, the extra cost for the tape really isn't necessary. BTW, the filter housing allows for an additional 8 oz. of fluid.

I have two questions:

How do you re-fill the transmission, (does the new fluid have to be pumped into the transmission)?

At what mileage should this be done?

Thanks,

Craig

I changed mine at 15,000 miles, the first time & 37,000, the second time.

The first change had quite a bit of yellow metal (brass) from the synchro's & the oil was a bit dirty. In my opinion, the first change would be somewhat important, in order to get the break-in materials out of the trans. & doing it sooner rather than later would probably be a good idea.

The second change showed very little in the yellow metals but, the oil was discolored (dirty).

The guys at Quad 4X4 thought that 30,000 mile oil changes would probably be a good idea, as I recall. I think they are probably right. Especially, if you work the trans. hard.
