Dreaded Dowel Pin

Cummins drivers: I decided I couldn't wait for the drilling jig, so I did the dowel pin retainer fix. I found a Lyle 36mm fan wrench at a discount tool store for $20, and the fan removal took some time. If you're a praying man, do that first. A flat tipped punch held on the flat of the fan nut and whacked a couple of times helped too. It came loose.

Seal kit: 3804899
Cost is under $50 and part numbers were for a '96 Cummins Ram.

IMO you are better off taking it apart anyway. What did you find, was the pin migrating towards disaster? Did you loctite (242 blue) all the internal bolts that you could find? Your'e lucky on finding that fan wrench, I wound up using a monkey wrench... big b!tch. The pin in mine was tight and bottomed out, and it is nice having replaced that slow seeping seal.

Statland: The pin was tight as far as I could tell, just sticking out a little. I tapped it with punch and hammer to see if it was bottomed... it was. I used the loctite 242 blue and 271 red on the seal. I simply could not locate any 277.

If the dowel pin is loose, why not just pull it out? Any problem with doing this?
