I'll be purchasing an EDGE juice/attitude this coming Monday and will be installing a pyrometer as part of the installation. My question is: Should the exhaust manifold be drilled and tapped when is at operating temperature, or when the manifold is at its ambient temp. Would the manifold be more susceptible to damage due to its temperature?

thanks for the thoughts

the 3rd gens seem to be very picky where to tap

it has to be perfect there are many guides and photos here on TDR of 3rd gen tapping for pyro do a search.

Thanks for the input, I had planned to install it there, but my main concern was the temp of the manifold. Such as if its drilled and tapped cold, when it heats up will the connections be prone to a leak and vice-versa.

I installed one on an "01 in 2000 and it was still good after over 4 years. This one on the '05 is only a few days old, I don't expect any problems with it either. Also, I had an egt gauge on one of them F**Ds for over 14 years, no problems with it either.

I got my Juice in but have not got it installed yet. THe funny thing is that the picture in the instructions shows the probe located differently than where most of the people on here are putting it. It is in the top of the manifold just out from #3, do ya'll think that it should be where it is in the previous post or where Edge say to put it? Please advise bucause i am chomping at the t it. Thanks Keith

My understanding is that the most current advice is to install the EGT probe in the exhaust manifold slightly downstream from the outlet of cylinder number 5 because that location has been found to be the hottest point in the exhaust manifold on the 3rd Gen Cummins.

Of course we know what opinions are like, everybody has one, but, placing the probe in this particular spot you get both the problem cylinders... 5 and 6.

These gauges are only ball park figures anyway, unless you have balanced bridge instrumentation and a calibrated probe tester to adjust it, as in aircraft instruments. I wouldn't depend on one if I was running within 50* of meltdown temperature.

Place Probe in location Per Edge instructions,This will eliminate and warranty issue if they develop. Edge may have calibrated it for that position. Now if you desire another location check with them,Or authorized installers

I installed my EGT probe at the top of #3, so I'll probably install the probe for the Banks Quick Loader at the manifold outlet.

Just be careful if you do like the picture above. Stay to one side like the pic. There is a web in the casting in the middle.

did the wifes cold ... in location shown above ... cold

done maybe a dozen ... did a first gen today ... all cold ... no problems whatsoever
