Drive belt removal

What is the trick to get the drive belt off. I have a squek in the belt area and think it is the belt tensioner. I put the 3/8 ratchet in the hole and turned the tensioner to release the belt. But it still is on really tight and I can't slip the belt off the water pump it is the older style with a lip. My truck has AC, am I doing this right? Just need to force the belt off over the water pump?

I'm not sure which way you're pulling the bar, but it should move the tensioner far enough to easily slip the belt off the alternator. You can release the bar and take it the rest of the way from there. I spent 10 years and broke 2 tensioners trying to pry them the wrong way..... yes, it can be done!!
