Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Drive line clunk or bang

I just returned from vacation and on my way home I noticed if I was cruising 55 or more miles per hour and I let up on the throttle and coast when I reapply throttle I get a clunking or banging noise. After I got home I looked at u joints motor mounts and didn't see a problem there. I then had my wife get into truck and go from reverse to drive and back into reverse as I looked at drive line and I noticed as it goes into reverse the drive shaft acts as if it is trying to go into gear several times or keep bouncing in the same direction several times before coming to a stop. Does anyone have any tips to what is happening or suggestions to try to locate the problem?

jumin' driveshaft

Is your slip joint worn out and jumping splines? My 91 is due for a new driveshaft. Pops when you let the clutch out. ,

It ended up being a U-Joint. Thanks for the imput. I didn't see as much play in the joint so I didn't think that was the problem.

My U-joints were ok, but on the extended truck I have an extra set of U's. The splines on the rear yoke are wearing some and I get quite a clank. I've gotten in the habit, maybe not a good habit, of shifting into neutral when stopping at lights and signs. Have had trouble in the past with the transmission not dropping down and/or out of OD. When this happens it likes to tear something outta that drive line. Seems to run alittle cooler manually shifting out when loaded and creeping stop'n'go traffic through cities I pass through getting to the other side. About the only time I see 180*F transmission temps, then and when backing sometimes.
