Mine is getting wet and slinging transfer case oil on the underside of my truck. Went to the dealer, they don't think it's a problem since it's not leaking. I don't really want to get into a fight with them and force them to work on my truck. So I wanna fix this myself if it's cheap enough. The oil is coming out of the plug on the drive shaft yolk. So what are my options? Take off the drive shaft and get a machine shop to weld the plug to the yolk? Buy a new yolk?



Don't like the idea of getting into a fight with someone and handing him my keys. :eek:
 
I'm not sure what you mean by the plug on the driveshaft yoke, but if oil is sprayed under your truck from the yoke, then I would argue that it is leaking. When you stop, the oil level settles below the level of the seal, and the leak stops. Also, grease from u-joints can get sprayed under the body, too.



If the bearing supporting the yoke and its shaft is not loose, then it's probably just the seal, which is pretty easy to replace.
 
I don't know if we're talking about the same thing, but mine did something similar since day one. They called it the front driveline yolk, and it would leave a quarter sized puddle under my truck ever night it was so bad.



When I took it in for the clutch TSB, I pointed it out and they said the only way to fix it for certain was to replace the entire yolk. Took 2-3 weeks to come in, as it was on national back order. I believe it because the new part is nice and shiny, unlike the rusted POS that came on there from the factory. If interested, I can try to find pics I took of it before and after.



That was a week ago and no more leaks yet. I'd tell them it's puddling in your driveway. That seems to get them more motivated than just slinging fluid.
 
It's not the seal, sounds weird, but it's the yolk itself. I guess I'm gonna have to do something soon, I checked the transfer case oil and I was down a quart. It never leaks when stopped, all you see is a layer of oily dust and sand that is about 1/2 thick and is wet to the touch. I drive off road everyday around the dusty farm so it looks bad, but no leaks or drips. I guess I'll take it in when I have time and see what they say.
 
They told me that if I had not said it was puddling, they would have told me "no".

Look at the end of the yoke. It has a welsh plug installed in it. Spray it off with brake or carb cleaner, and then watch carefully. If the oil starts to seep out of the plug, the yoke needs to be replaced. The yoke is serviced separately from the drive line. Don't let them replace the assembly, as with the out of balance shafts some have, no need to start another problem!

Hadn't thought of getting a different drive shaft, now I'm even more set on doing this myself. It is coming from the "welsh" plug, you can see the little trails of clean coming off the yolk from the plug.



I guess I'm just paranoid about warranty work. I'm gonna visit a driveline shop in the next week or two and let them fix it. Driveline Express in Lubbock, TX, they did a real slick job on my Jeep drive shafts on an 80 CJ I used to have, I trust them.
