I would say that the driveshaft and related parts are rated for less than stock specifications as that is what my truck is. And I had the rear driveshaft entirly replaced as the rear u-joint went out and (as the dealer told me) the middle carrier bearing was worn badly. All at just around 30K. Don't get me wrong- I still like the truck. It is nice to have a wealth of power in an engine that will outlast a gasser, I will just have to deal with driveline wear, suspension and steering wear etc... unless I upgrade post warantee. -frank

Drive shaft one of the stongest links

IMHO... the drive shaft in a 5sp (that is my experience) has to be the stongest or near the stongest components in the entire drive train.

I had mine rebuilt at 210K miles. No problems, just thought it must be worn based on all the rear tire wear and 5sp problems. ! If I had not told the driveline shop the miles on the truck, they would have just balanced and reinstalled. All joints were factory original. Still have factory carrier bearing.

Those 210K miles has 190K of very hard pulling and towing. Several 750 mile trips pulling 24K of stacked trailers running extra hp on our rough roads. You could measure several 32nd wear on the rears each trip. Lots of winter snow and ice.

We have several dozen dodges at work that tow all the time with lots of high speed and gravel roads. Driveline problems are non existent!

It just frightens me that they are still putting aluminum tube drive shafts on our trucks. I know it's strong in a cylinder formation, but the abuse that we subject them to, you would think that we would hear more about twisted drive lines.

Dodge must be

using some fairly good u joints. I just traded my 92 Dakota v8 4x4 with 156k. I never replaced a ujoint or any drive line parts.

When Did They Switch To Aluminum Driveshafts?

My '98. 5 2500 LWB 4x4 has a 2-piece, steel driveshaft. Are they using the aluminum driveshafts on the newer and/or SWB Rams? What's up with that?

As just a precautionary measure, I took my driveline into the driveline shop yesterday to have all three U-joints and the center bearing replaced as well as having the entire assembly balanced.
