Hi, could someone tell me what is normal play is in the drive train, I am referring to the rear drive shaft play with the truck in neutral. Mine seems to have a bout 1/2inch or so of play is that normal?

My truck is an 04 3500 SRW with 20K.

Thanks

Come on guys someone must have an idea what is normal. The reason I ask is I seem to have a bit of a driveline clunk when the trans is shifting down (48RE) from 2nd to 1st. I think it maybe my BD Pressure-loc not realeaseing line pressure, but I am wondering if maybe I have a bad pinion grear or backlast issue ?

Thanks for any assistance

I have a general interest in this question also. I have a Suncoast triple lok torque converter and a Fairbanks racing valve body in my 48RE. Sometimes on the upshift from 1st or 2nd I get a klunk.

Similarly, on the downshift in the lower gears I get the same klunk. Sometimes it sounds like it is comming from the transmission, sometimes it sounds like slack in the driveshaft.

I just went out and checked mine and it's about the same as your. The drivetrain tolerances do leave something to be desired but every 4x4 I've ever owned has had a lot of drivetrain play. Room for heat expansion and normal gear lash.

i have a good bit of backlash on the rear diff on my truck too... i really need to get around to changing the oil in both diff's and when i am in the rear i'm gonna take a good look at the mesh pattern on the gears. if it looks good to me, i won't worry about it. a little extra lash there isn't going to hurt anything.

Thanks guys, seems that my backlash is about normal. I guess It's got to be my BD pressure-loc that's hanging up :(

On the topic of rear diffs. What is the thoughts of draining the rear diff fluid Millage?

I have 20K and I was thinking about changing it. pretty simple procedure isn't it?

How does one determine what rear axle we have on the 3500 SRW? the 10 1/2 or the 11 1/2 also what brand fluid do guys recommend other than the Mopar stuff.

Thanks
