My carrier bearing went out today. It slid forward out of the sqaure bracket. I'm taking the driveline to a shop tomarrow to get a new cb, inspect the u-jounts, and balance the drive shaft. I was thinking of replacing the driveshaft to a bigger stronger one. Is the stock shaft sufficiant? I love the look of the chevy shafts. It looks real beefy.

I dropped off the driveline at the driveline shop this morning. Carrier bearing had to be ordered. No heavy duty CBs available. Damper is a lil' worn out. He said he's going to take off the damper, balance the shafts, and not put the damper back on. How important is the damper on the driveshaft? I was told the damper is not needed if the shafts are balanced. The rubber boot is torn. How important is the boot?

I believe the Chevy uses an aluminum driveshaft. If so, that explains the large size (aluminum is a lot weaker than steel).

I got the driveshafts back today. They replaced the u-joints with greasable ones, took off the damper, balanced the shafts, new carrier bearing, and put a fresh coat of paint. So far it feels great. I need to make a set of traction bars to stop axle wrap. All the work cost me $426. 00.

Well, bad news. After I test drove the truck, I noticed oil splatter everywhere under the truck from the transfer case back. The transfer case seal where the driveshaft connects is shot. I had noticed a leak for sometime now, but could never find where it was coming from. I have an appointment monday to get it replaced and a transmission flush. The truck has 155,000 miles. Is this normal wear and tear?

Thanks to all for the advice so far. :)

The damper is there to "dampen" torsional oscillations that produce gear whine and increased driveline wear at certain speeds. No manufacturer would spend the money to put it on if it wasn't needed. It's like the harmonic damper at the front of the engine.

The boot keeps the spline from rusting up. It's very important, although some older trucks have open slides that need to be greased periodically.
