Driveline Vibration

this is a buddy's truck 04 2500 auto 6inch lift 83,000 miles . the truck as a vibration and noise from about 5 to 80 mph . he pulled the front drive shaft out the vibration and noise is gone . we tried a different drive shaft with the same results . it has had new axle joints put in right before he noticed the noise and vibration . he thinks it is in the transfer case but i think it is the front diff . any and all help would be great . he is driving around with out a front shaft and weather is getting bad . once again thanks

Have him take the driveshaft to a driveline shop, and get it balanced. Even with new u-joints, it could be off.

The rear drive shaft could be out of phase. When he goes to take it out have him mark the shaft and when he reinstalls it do not line up the marks. I had this same problem.

Getting the shaft balanced will also help a lot

the other shaft he put in only had 24,000 miles and was fine in the donor truck . his shaft was fine when we put it in the donor truck . the rear shaft has never been out .

About 2 years ago there was a thread where some one had the same problem as you. They checked the angles of the drive shaft and were able to get an angled shim under the carrier bearing.

Stock Dodge Rams trucks don't have carrier bearings. Carrier bearings are used to "get around" things like oil pans, bell housings, etc. Typically found on front driveshafts, they usually bolt to the frame, and allow a driveshaft to go forward of the tcase, thru the carrier bearring, and immediately ujoint and head straight to the front diff.



A truck with a carrier bearing typically has a driveshaft with 3 ujoints, with one in the middle. (like your elbow on your arm)



Your friend is correct in that their placement (distance and geometry) greatly affects driveline vibration.

Longbed Quadcabs and Megacabs 03' to 07' do have a carrier bearing on the rear driveshaft.

Sounds like a pinio angle problem to me, this is a pretty common problem with our trucks with 6" or greater lifts. I ended up clocking my transfer case to correct this issue.

Front driveline issues... I have a 04 Ram SRW 35004x4, after several dozens of stops to the dealership for the vibration problem I learned to live with it, several rebuilt or replaced rear driveshafts, very long story, wonder how these dealerships stay in business. Solution, one piece aluminum rear driveshaft, and back to old school technology with a free spin front hub kit. This truck is now smooth 0-85 mph and some. The vibration I had in my truck from day one that I picked it off the lot.

My driveline vibration occurred at 104k. After I replaced the vibration dampener and the vibration was still there,we realized that the dual mass flywheel was coming apart. New South Bend Clutch kit fixed the vibration. Truck now has 335k and still no vibration. My truck does have a 2 piece driveshaft.

My friend recently had a driveline vibration before and after replacing all driveshaft u joints. Turns out they put one joint in which was some rediculous thousands of an inch off. Changed it with the right one and now is perfect.

Old post but my 2002 3500 long bed has a rear carrier bearing in between rear drive shaft and transfer case.
