Driveline vibration ?

I picked up my new truck last Friday, I only have 200 miles on her, but I have some slight vibration. It sounds as if it were coming out of the 6 speed, also the transmission is fairly loud, bearing and gear noise that is. The noise is only there under load (acceleration) . Is this normal? The vibration and noise get a little better the longer I am driving. It is the worst when everything is still cold. Is all this normal? This is my first Diesel and I don't know what to expect. Will things improve, Or is there something wrong? I have read some post that other trucks might be doing the same thing. I appreciate any input from fellow owners.

We pay BIG $$$ for these babies, we want everything to be just right. Plus dealing with service departments @ the dealer is usually a pain in the A**.

My 5 speed does the same thing. The vibrating sound I hear seems to come from the boot on the shifter. Try pushing the boot down the shifter to see if the sound changes/goes away. Under load/acceleration, anything the little cubby holes also vibrate. My transmission makes quite a bit of noise when cold, too, the bearings and stuff like that.

The NV4500 I have in my 2001. 5 (with a 360 gasser) makes noise when it is cold and the outside temperature is below 50 degrees. The noise reminds me of a portable house fan with a bad/dry bearing. It used to bother me a lot but I got used to it; now it only bothers me a little. I looked for particles in the oil once and didn't see anything so I quit worrying. The noise goes away as soon as the transmission warms up a little. In the dead of winter this takes a few miles.

My 03 gets completely quite after I let out the clutch and only makes a slight rattle when I lug it in a high gear. Other than that it never makes a sound.

Go to the Dealer and drive another truck just like yours and see how they compare.

I notice what seems to be bearing noise when idling with the clutch engaged, and is expecially noticable at idle from the outside of the truck. This disappears when I push the clutch pedal in. I probably wouldn't have noticed the noise with my old engine but this one is so quiet. I assume the noise comes form the input shaft somehere. The transmission operates fine otherwise. Anyone else notice this? At this point I presume it is normal. Even so, it is nice to have that 7 year driveline warrantee. Cheers,

being an ex-trucker... the noise you are hearing is the throwout bearing in the clutch... this should be covered under warranty!!!!!! To replace it will mean droping the transmission

Wouldn't throw out bearing noice be more noticable when the clutch pedal is pushed in thereby placing a load on it?

Mine does the same thing. Ive got 2k on it now but it's always been that way.

Sometimes thay can be noisy without being engaged... I have seen that before... but then they become more noticable once the clutch is engaged

I posted here a while back that I had test driven an '03 3500 SO 4x4 with the 47RE. It had a noticable vibration under even slight load and it disappeared when coasting.



I told the shop manager about it and he and it took it out again. He noticed it too and said he would take out one of the other diesels for comparison. I haven't gotten back to him.



It felt to me like when my '95 is in four on snow, and I hit a patch of dry pavement. Kind of a low rumble/vibration. I took my wife for a drive a few days later and I didn't tell her about it to see if she noticed. She did, and she is not as particular as I am about her vehicle.



Is this what your vibration was like? I'd like to know before trading my '95. The only thing I don't like about the '95 is the 4. 10 rear end and manual shift.

This is my third manual DC/TD. I hear the same noises and thought about it too. As someone posted earlier, the quieter engine permits clutch/transmission noises to be more audible. If it doesn't get worse, I woldn't worry about it. Mine seems to have quieted down some, or maybe I'm just tuning it out. I have almost 4k miles. Keep us posted.

Just a quick update @ 300 miles the noise and vibration are still there. It does get better but not gone when everything warms up. I only drive 8 miles to work, although the engine comes up to temp the transmission is still cold. I am going on a 5 1/2 hour road trip in 2 weeks to go Upstate NY to do some hunting, then have to go to PA in December. I will see how things go when I put a few more miles on her, if it does not get better then back to the dealer she goes.

Other than the above I really love the truck, so much more then the 01 Dakota Quadcab I traded in.
