Clutch Disc Failure 04

My 6-speed 04. 5 has 8000 miles on it and it recently started doing two things. The first is a slight slip or hesitation on takeoff and this occurs in first and second and does not always occur. The other thing is if you bog the motor on slowing down, say in third gear, then at about 8 mph press the clutch and come to a full stop right before stopping the drivetrain shudders, this shudder is audible but you can't feel it. Anyone else have this happen and what do you all think it may be? I am thinking driveshaft is out of balance. Thanks boys.

At or below 8 mph in 3rd gear the engine rpm is below 750 rpm... the computer fights to get the rpm up even if your foot is off the throttle... . so the computer will ramp up the speed only to jump ahead and than fall back again..... your lugging the engine... something you shouldn't do with a diesel... .

Drive shaft balance would give you some problem at low speed and get worse as the speed increases in most cases... . I don't believe you have a balance problem...

As to the clutch problem... you don't express your problem well enough for me to understand...

Hope I've been of some help...

Thanks for the help on lugging the engine, the hesitation problem occurs if you pull out in any gear and only occurs occasionally, it is the same pulling out in first and second gears. Once the clutch is completely out and your foot is off of it when you begin accelerating sometimes you can feel a slip that feels like the tires are breaking lose like you are on ice but I know I am not spinning. The hesitation isn't in the engine it is something involving the transmission back, I am taking it in to the dealer on Monday and I will let you all know what goes on, thanks again.

Does it happen more when it's wet out? And I agree with Jim - stop running the truck down to 8 mph in 3rd gear... you're killing it!

First time I experienced something similar was in 92 had a new UD truck with a 6. 9l diesel made by Nisson. The truck had so much low end torque that when starting out from stop signs or lights the rear tires would break loose (just a bit) when they hit the yellow strips for the cross walks. You could feel the slip or hesatation. On wet days it would really slip and the truck would jump when it got traction again. After doing it a couple times on a wet day I figured it out.

You read my mind. That is exactly why I asked if it seems worse on wet days. I've owned 2 pickups in my life (94 Ranger and the Ram) and both slipped on the cross walk strips. When I first had my Ranger it was a bit unnerving until I realized what was going on.
