Hi Everyone, Crawled under my truck this evening because it had started vibrating badly when accelerating. I discovered that what I assume is a damper (large round disc on the driveshaft right before it enters the transmission) is completely loose and moving all around. I couldn't find any thing about it in my haynes manual. Is this repairable or am I looking at a new driveshaft.

It's most likely the rubber carrier from the center driveshaft bearing. Check about 1/2

way back. The driveshaft should go thru a metal brace that holds the bearing and rubber bushing. It should all be held by the brace that it bolted to the truck. I would help if you told us what truck your driving.

The truck is a 1997 3500. This has nothing to do with the center bearing holder and is not rubber. The large metal disc is mounted in front of the front u-joint between it and the transmission.

That large metal disk is part of the yoke, about $400 from the dealer. If in fact the yoke is bad, which I doubt, Blumenthals will sell you a replacement (without the disk, works just fine, thankyou) for about $70. I believe all you need is a new front u-joint and/or the bushing that is inside the trans tailshaft.

In that case, If the disc will come off the yoke can I just leave it off? Any body know what purpose it serves?

It is part of the yoke and won't come off, at least mine was.
