My 2005 3500 Ram has developed a noise over a long period of time. It has the sound of a u-joint going bad but the u-joints and carrier check out good. The noise is in 3rd gear at approximately 15-20 mph under light load. Has anyone experienced a similar situation?

The noise is a whining sound that continues to get louder as the mileage increases. This has happened over a period of 10,000 miles. It now has a wavering sound just like a u- joint. I replaced two of the rear joints which showed very little wear. I did not replace the front joint as there appeared to be no rough spots and it showed no play. I also replace the carrier bearing. Third gear is where the sound is most pronounced. The truck has always has shutter when starting under load. One concern is that it might be the transmission but I do not know how you could determine that.

Thanks

just had three u-joints replaced on my 04 this week. 37000 miles. the rear drive shaft ujoint going into the diff was ceased. the dealer also replaced both fronts. . Mine was making noise as well, then started vibrating. it also was effecting my syncros in my transmission. made my shifting notchy.

I just had the two rear u-joints replaced last week at 58,344 miles on my 03 QC SB HO 3. 73 6 spd. The sound was a continous chirping/warbling sound (like a loud bird) and a vibration in the drive line. I have talked to several folks around Anchorage who have replaced u-joints at the 55,000 to 60,000 mile range. I talked with the service manager and was informed that they cannot be greased, but a I read a post recently that said they can be. I don't know if the can or not.

Factory joints are not greaseable.

NStates, that sure does sound like a u-joint! I'd try replacing the fronts.
