Driveway oil spotting revisited

Just thought I'd let you guys know I did visit the dealer for the first time about my oil leak issue. The crank seal on the front cover was the culprit. The truck hasn't left a drop of oil since then, hope it stays that way.



The dealer experience wasn't to bad, the day I took it in they didn't work it, picked it up the second day and discussed the seal work with the technician.



Anyone else experience a leaking crank seal on a new truck?



I'm getting ready to do my first oil change, picked up a Fleetguard filter and Rotella oil today.

joens,I don't know if the 2002 has a blow by bottel like the 2000 do, but if they do take it off when you change the oil,it's right behind the fan,and boy do they make a mess:--) just get 24 inches of 3/4 inch heater hose, a line splice, and 2 hose clamps and a zip tie and tie it to the sway bar and cut the hose just below the sway bar,it may leave a drop of oil now and then but it beats all the grime on the fan and the block,get ready for the smell of rotella after a change for the first 3 or 4 hundred miles then it goes awayI know I use rottel-t also, just my 2 cents worth Don

Thats good news JOENS, glad to hear it went well. My truck is two and a half years old, never seen a drop of oil under it. I did move the blow by bottle back so the fan would not pick up the mist and make everything oily, but did not remove it like most people, I just drain it when I change the oil and no problems.

When relocating the blow by bottle with an extended length of hose, does anyone know if this causes any problems with crankcase ventilation? Is the oily mist still present after relocation? It seems that Dodge and Cummins could have come up with a more modern means of ventilation than the bottle. I did read on this site about condensation posssibly freezing in the hose in cold weather.



Rotella odor - I didn't notice the odor with first couple hundred miles on the new engine, Dodge stocks Rotella in the parts department, do they use Rotella in the new Cummins engines or something else?

joens,I don't know if it will cause any crankcase ventilation problems? In my opinion you are not doing anything that differant than cummins did with the bottle just moving it down with no catch bottle. Ihave no problem with oil mist now, just a small drop of oil on the garage floor now and then, but I had that with the bottle. I too tought cummins or dodge could come up with a better location for the bottle?(we can send a man to the moon for Christ sake) I think it would be hard to freeze this 3/4 inch hose shut, but i quess it could happen, more if you are plowwing snow, and as for the smell, put the rotella-t in and see for yourself

JOENS, What ever you do, extend the bottle or remove it and add longer hose, be sure you don't kink it and that its running downward so that oil or water will run out. I get no mist or mess with my bottle still on but moved it back and down aways from the fan. I just don't like OIL spots on my driveway.
