got a transmission question,. sometimes on my way to work i drive in the

tow/haul position (street drive only) does this position lock out OD?.

i drive in this position because the rpm run 1700-2000 - the engine sounds

happier when i drive this way, but i am not sure if i am doing the right thing for the transmission. or is this position used only when you really tow?

I think that only changes shift rpms, and patterns. I cant remember what year the change was, But the 05 T/H mode does NOT lock-out O/D

Shouldn't bother a thing. Just changes valve body pressures etc. 05 it dosen't lock out o/d. Pervious year models it did. The previous year models its not really a tow/haul function just a o/d lock out. 05 is a true tow/haul feature.

I normally do my in town stop and go driving with T/H on. If I am going to go over 55 I take it off. Should keep the trans cooler in city stop and go with the higher rpms.

Clairification

I just wanted some clairification, the 05 is the first year that the tow/haul does not lock out OD? I have the 04. 5 and occationally tow a travel trailer around Alaska, and would like to know. I think that just changing the RPM would make more sense for gas milage. Thanks

O5 is the first year for tow/haul and yes it locks out overdrive as well as changing the shift points. The previous years it was a OVERDRIVE cancel button only. It did not change shift points. It only locked out overdrive.

Since I installed my trans monitor, I can see what gear I'm in at any time. I was wrong in the past about what shifts I thought I was feeling. Anyway, on my 05, the T/H button changes the order of the OD shift and TC lockup... . ie the TC locks before the OD shift. If one engages the T/H button WHILE decellerating, foot off the throttle, the trans shifts out of OD and holds the truck back, nice when exiting freeway or going down grades. If you touch the throttle, it shifts back into OD. I have to reset the T/H button, off then back on if I want to use the engine braking feature again. Kind of wierd.

The monitor came from a guy in Arkansas that Tony at Dunrite Convertors recommended. His name is Bill Ketterly I think. Anyway, Tony will know. Bill has a setup that includes a trans temp guage, a foot button that allows you to lock the convertor anytime, and his series of leds that tell you which gear you are in. He uses an autometer gauge mount that sits on top of the steering column. I cut the wires and removed the 'guts' and mounted them in the dash by cutting out the cigarette lighter. I guess I am always going the long way around.

I'd like to get a little clarification if you can on whether the '05 48RE tow/haul is supposed to lock out Overdrive. our post on 5/13 say that it does and your post on 5/07 that it doesn't.

I have on 05 pulling a 12K 5er and the transmission does shift in to OD with tow/haul engaged on level or slight grades. A Friend has an 04. 5 with the same the 48RE and it never shifts into OD with Tow/haul engaged. This seems to agree with your post of 5/07 that the 04 is an OD lock out.

Tim, I'll tell you my experience. I just returned from a trip to Canada and my first with the trans monitor. It is very difficult to tell the difference between the OD shift and the torque converter locking (even more with a triple clutch converter and other trans upgrades). The monitor I use has a lamp for each shift and lock-up. When I use the tow/haul position, the computer changes the shift points. It stays longer (more rpm) for the od and lock which seems to make accelerating with a load better. It does not prevent a shift into OD as the pre 05 trucks do. It also provides engine braking during long down hill towing which I have become used to in the Rocky Mountains. I don't think I would have been able to understand what it was doing without the trans monitor.
