Since My torque plate was installed I have a few questions-Should my auto still be somewhat sluggish off the line? I really don't notice improvements until I am rolling up in the 40 -50 mph range then it seems to kick in extremely well. Is their something to do to get that off the line kick? I always get a little puff of black smoke when I accelerate heavy but looking for more acceleration power in the lower ranges THANKS

Sorry Red, but until you spend big money on your auto, Im afraid youre stuck. The automatic transmission is a horribly inefficient mechanism, and most of your added power is going into the destruction of your trans. From reading what 'the boys' all have to say, order up some Bill K. equipment, and watch both your mileage and performance jump!

I have a similar setup. 98 12v with a tst #5 plate. Auto seems to eat all the low end power.
At dieselfest I drove Bill K. truck. WOW it was a 24v and had a couple of mods. I think it was a box and a set of 275 injectors and that is it. Man that thing moved. It didn't have that loss of power on the low end like my stock auto.
I was sold by the test drive. And great service even though he had to sit in the parking lot. Great product Bill. now only if I could get a group price of free.

It isnt so much the power made, but its being put on the ground that you feel... a new hot Sachs clutch isnt far off for me! #ad

You can help it some by turning the "star" wheel under the 10mm allen screw on the AFC housing toward the motor. As has been suggested above, you do lose alot of power in first and second because all that happens is the engine just revs up faster and higher but the truck doesn't move any faster because of the gosh awful torque converter slippage. Don't forget to back out of the throttle as the torque converter goes into lock up! Your transmission will thank you #ad
After all, would you jam a standard into gear and pop the clutch out without backing out of it?

Auto transmission is the right culprit. It lets the engine rev up beyond the power band and just won't let you build the boost by loading up the engine until you lock up the convertor. The power is much nicer when you can put it to the ground, instead of out the exhaust.

You can find Bill K at Diesel Transmission Technology under TDR links. You can find many auto trans products in the TDR links section. I chose BD and I'm happy with all of thier products. If I had a question, I called them and they bent over backwards with customer support. I installed everything myself.

Yup, it's the TC-- BD (the exhaust-brake people) will be releasing their new torque converter (they already have some on the market) pretty soon. Piers has their prototype in his truck, and is able to deliver enough torque for tire-slippage (major understatement! #ad
) Engine puts out something like 1057lbft/500+HP... . His video of an ice-blue Dodge should still be linkable by way of BD's website... our stock TC has less than 90% fluid efficiency. That one is closer to 94% --woohoo!
that kick in the pants you're getting between 40-50mph is "lockup", where the TC's solid clutching surfaces finally engage, like a real clutch, but not as massive (or faithful to BIG torque delivery under BIG towing resistance)... . Your grandpa's automatic, (and probably your dad's for that matter) didn't have lockup clutches. they were fluid-couple TC's only, and made slippage ALL the time. In the late 80's the lockup converter was developed... that's what we all have now.

RedNut- I had the same problem as you. With the new plate TST 275hp my lock up spun but my 0-45 times were almost identical with the 225 hp plate. I ordered and installed Bill Kondalays TC and saw an imediate inprovement in 0-45 times. I cut 1. 5 seconds off of my baseline times. That stock TC eats up power and torque.
