I have a 2004. 5 3500 Dodge duallly with the cummings engine and a 48RE automatic transmission. When I am cruising around 60-65 mph in forth gear I hear a dronning noise sometimes swishing noise. Is this a natural thing with the dodge ram truck. Is this the turbine winding up?? Please can anyone tell me if this is trouble or just an natural thing with this truck. The dronning sound isn't loud or annoying I just wondered what it could be.

A lot of people on here will hear that drone noise your talking about right around 2000 rpm. It's a "normal thing". There are different set ups for mufflers that will help with that sound.

The swishing noise is probably the turbo spooling up. If you are driving with the cruise at 60 and the noise is more obvious going uphill, then it is the turbo. Normally, it would sound like a whistle, unless you have modified the intake (They still whistle, but you could hear the swish from the air being drawn through the filter). It may be worth checking the intake tube and make sure all the clamps are properly placed and tight. Unless you are experiencing a loss of power/mileage or a lot of smoke, it is probably not a leak from the turbo forward.

I get the exhaust drone you are speaking of under load, going up hills etc, at rpm's around 1500-1700, which is about where you would be at 60mph. All other times it is nice and quiet

My guess is that all the swishing and drone you are hearing is normal for the CTD.

You may be hearing the cooling fan clutch kicking in and out. It seems the newer CTDs have an electronically controlled clutch fan that turns on/off on a whim (air-conditioning head pressure, etc). I noticed this difference on my 2003 from my '99 Dodge immediately. The fan will even turn on 30 sec or so after a cold start if you have the defroster on. Just my observations. Mike

The cooling fan doesn't engage over 25-30 MPH (it assumes there's enough air movement), so it's probably not that. The turbo sound should be easy to identify. It'll spool up & hold while you're under load, then drop back down when you let off the throttle.

Boonsur, Are you stating that above a road speed of 25-30 mph, that the fan absolutely does not engage under any conditions? Mike
