Someone brought up the vibration issue at 2,100 rpms in another topic (I believe the Aeroturbine muffler thread) and it wasn't clear if this droon was caused by the stock exhaust or the turbo. Does anyone have experience with this issue??

The droon is even more noticable when I turn on the A/C.

Thanks,

Chris

It's just the Cummings reminding you whats under the hood:eek: I notice it more in this one than the other ones I had. You just notice it more because it's a lot quieter engine. You get used to it.

Seems to go away above 2300 RPM, with the 4. 10s that's not hard to do. Probably just some weird harmonic somewhere in the engine or drivetrain.

I am not sure what the cause of the 2,100rpm drone is, but have seen significant reduction of it using the Aeroturbine muffler and our Turbo Air Guide (TAG). Both of these items effect air that goes through the turbo, so it maybe by changing the frequency of the system with these items either moves the drone to an rpm above where the truck normally operates.

Car_nut57 - I have heard a bit about your TAG, please tell more. Just installed your aeroturbine kit and always looking to improve on that already awesome motor!!!

Can you install the aeroturbine on a stock exhaust system?

I'm new to the diesel world but learning lots on TDR, please excuse my ignorance!

Well sort of. The Aeroturbine is 4" in and out and what we have been doing is providing a Ford pipe that converts from 3-1/2" to 4" and has a bend in it to install the Aeroturbine. This also requires the first pipe after the down pipe be rotated 180 degrees because of its bend and cut the tail pipe at the transition from 3-1/2 to 4.

We also offer a kit that has the 4" down pipe and intermediate pipes with Aeroturbine and hangers. All new pipe except the tail pipe is reused. Much easier to install and the added flow of 4" down pipe. You can see some photos of these kits and hear a sound file of the Aeroturbine on the Cummins on our website.

I hope this helps to answer your question.

I've got 4. 10s and THAT DRONE drives me NUTS. Its from 60 to 70 mph and one sweet spot it will drive you outa the truck. IT SUCKS BAD. Where ever its exhaust or turbo D. C. I hope is addressing it. terrible noise on a 40k truck I will change exhaust in future but D. C. had to know about that terrible noise before release.

Change the muffler (to a NON OEM design). Drone should change. If it doesn't then you have a new muffler and it should sound better anyway.

Also read that clamping angle iron to the exhaust system can help. You may want to try that too, if you don't think it is the exhaust. I'll bet it is.

My 2G had a slight drone with the stock muffler removed, and then a horrible BRAAP with the 5" straight. Now I'm running a GUTTED big-rig muffler and have SUPER SOUND and no drone whatsoever.

BOMB that pipe DUDE!:D

Was told that a straight through design muffler or no muffler on 03 would make drone WORSE! Anyone else can chime in! Was told by D. C. was in turbo? Haven't gotton a real answer from them! Techs say can hear it and feel it from turbo! I thinks its VERY LOUD. After a few hundred miles of driving/towing 60 to 70 mph its all you hear. Can feel the tingle vibration of it in pedals, steering wheel, console etc. At times wife says WOW it peaked through that rpm area, she hears it very well from passenger side also. I think its a REAL issue as I wonder what will happen over time if it can be felt in the turbo housing. In fact I'm gonna call D. C. I CANT DO NOTHING LINE TODAY!I want to know what the D. C. engineers are really saying about it. Rest of truck is great no other issues. 2700 miles only at this time.

My point is DO something.

How about clamping a hunk of angle iron to the exhaust pipe? You can move it around to find where it helps.

BTW-"feel it at the turbo" GUESS what, the turbo is part of the exhaust system.

JUST DO IT.

More encouragement necessary? HERE'S HOW, Okay get some two or three inch angle iron, about a foot long. (free out of your local welder/fab shop scrap pile). Get two or three clamps (any kind) long enough to go around your pipe and the angle iron. Crawl up under truck (not running) clamp iron to exhaust system any place you see fit. (I'd try in front of muffler, near transmission, behind muffler. )

Rev it up. Repeat until you find results you like, then test drive.

Report results here for all the suffering 03 owners out there who haven't done anything to fix the drone.

Well the truck is heading to the dealer tomorrow, the 2100 rpm droan/ vibration know has a buzz in the dash related to it. I have a new muffler coming and will put it on this weekend. I also have a few pieces of angle laying around and I will try that also.

I was not too bothered by it untill this buzz in the dash came along. Mine also gets worse (real bad) with the A/C on.

My friend has a 2500 H. O. 48re with 3. 73 has most all of the time a buzz in the left side dash area at just the right rpm. he can almost play tunes with it. WAS told by D. C. dealer that NO repair for DRONE that D. C. was working on it and that it was from TURBO. Let us know what your told!

I located my buzzzzzzzzz in the left side of dash:eek:

It is the little rubber coated leaver for the tilty flop steering. It does not fot tight on the shaft it rotates and buzzes at 2010 RPM. I fount it while trying to lean forward to locate the BUZZZZZZZZ. When I put some down pressure on the steering wheel while leaning forward it would stop and start again when I would lean back. So I started clamping/ pushing/ holding everything on the steering colum I could reach and BINGO! When I touched the little leaver it stopped, I rotated the lever and it stoped again when some pressure was applied.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to stop it as I know the DC warranty monkeys won't have a clue.

I can control the buzz with the throttle, made my wife laugh at me last night because I kept making it buzz and just got myself madder and madder. I will go out and try the tilt lever, I was pushing all over the dash and wedging my hand in places in the dash till it hurt looking for this thing. I hope that is it. I will let everyone know what happens tomorrow.

OK here is the what my ticket says:

There is a buzz/groan noise at 1900 to 2200 RPM

Vibration was felt in the steering wheel and floor

There are no repairs available at this time from Chrysler

Dash buzzes with the eng noise

Traced to the tilt column lever

Removed column shrouds and tightened all column parts

The services dept said that had not heard of this problem prior to me coming in. I was told they went to there dealer BB which I gathered to be something like this but for the services depts and that there was nothing on it either.

At least I got them to document that there was something there.
