You should add a 'No' for each category for a better statistical picture. Then we can say X % or all respondents report vibration. The breakdown by category is good.

You can only have 10 choices in the poll.

argh! what a wimpy site  just kidding... TDR rocks!

you obviously did it as well as you can given the available tools... . excellent!:D

What kind of noise or vibration would you get with a bad driveshaft? I hope a solution surfaces soon, because I don't want to go to the dealer until I have all my weapons loaded and ready to go. I swear, if I hear "cannot duplicate" one more time I will beat a service advisor senseless. It is so weird where the noise and vibration are because 50 to 60 are quiet and 75 is very quiet, but inbetween is very annoying.

Oh NO!!! We posted a problem on our site. Remember according to the F&^d boys we hide our problems and never post them. Man guys, we screwed up bad. Oh well, too late now. :rolleyes: :{

A drive shaft vibration will start around 45mph with a pulsating vibration and get worse as speed increases. It's very close in frequency to the 2100rpm drone at about 65mph. If your truck runs smooth at 55mph, chances are your drive shaft is fine.

Driveline angles can cause vibrations but it's more speed specific but again about the same frequency.

Not to confuse the topic, what we have is normal engine pulses being transmitted through the driveline and exhaust. It's what a 5. 9L Cummins does at 2100rpm. Someone came up with the idea of a turbo silencer ring to quiet the turbo for those who are irritated by the irritating whistle. Hopefully the engineers will come up with something to calm the vibration. Notice the big damper weight on the front of the driveshaft on the automatics. The vibration is really bad without it. My '95 didn't have the damper and received one under warranty. It calmed it down to the level we have now.

The number to D. C. customer no service is 1800-992-1997. I guess I never read the 2nd generation forum. I had a 1993w250 with no drone and in the 4 years I wrote service in a fairly large D. C. dealer(sold lots of trucks)I never had this drone issue come by me!But it sure is under my feet and in MY ears with this 2003. Try it in 5th gear at 2100/2200 rpm at night after driving a few hundred miles. I did. WOW my wife said DAMN I can feel it in the console lid and WHAT a NOISE. I could back off throttle and back on throttle and make it HOWL. Wife comment was it was like one of those PERSONAL vibrators(LOL)Oo.

I had the same problem, got a new drive shaft last week, now I no longer have the shudder I was getting at 65 mph. I don't really get a drone, but there is a slight vibration throughout the truck at 2200 rpm

Well its 6am something and yesterday I went to the dealer to get my Banks Monster exhaust installed. I do try to throw them a customer pay bone also. They were reasonable. 2. 5 hours and the tech was a real pro. Even wiped grease etc off the exhaust. ANYHOW. When I got there and it got started on the service manager came out and said STAR sent us a part with NO name/did'nt know it was coming etc. and it was a POWER STEERING HOSE with a large DAMPENER attached to it. Had my vin number attached to it. Thats what I meant by what is IT that there working on. Told me it was TURBO related noise and here comes a P/S HOSE. Any how he said we GOT to put in on before you swap the EXHAUST!To see if it helps the drone!I said well he EXHAUST is coming off now and not holding it up over a hose at this time. Service writer I deal with came out and said Star called and The Rep called late yesterday afternoon and want to know asap it it helps. I said well A LITTLE notice that a part was coming would have been nice and the writer said I agree and WHAT happened to THE TURBO noise THEY said it was!I said tell you what. You tell them you left a message on my answering machine and I haven't gotten back in touch with you yet. Lets get my exhaust on and I'll see you first of next week for HOSE. They got cool with that. ANY HOW I like the Banks system, all stainless, sounds good with out being too much. Fuel mileage was UP,popped 18mpg on way home(A FIRST)Tingle in steering etc at 2000 rpm a WHOLE LOT LESS,Still has a drone but nowhere near as OBNOXIOUS and that vacuum push noise at idle from exhaust is gone. Can tell it breathes much BETTER. Wife said it sounds just enough like it should without being too over done. Gonna let them put hose on Monday.

Last night I installed an AFE ProGuard 7 Intake system, went in real smooth (less than a half hour).

I went for a drive and this is what I noticed:

a) Vibration moved up to around 2300 - 23500 rpm and is not as severe (can hardly feel it in the steering wheel and seat). I can also slightly detect it at 2100 rpm (only a small window though)

b) I can hear the turbo whining a lot more (which is nice)

c) The go peddle seems to be more responsive, don't have to wait for something to happen.

d) When driving in residential area's, I can leave it in third and the cummins won't lug and make a real growling sound that is used to without the foot on the peddle. In fact, when I take off from a stop the growl is hardly noticeable.

So... the vibration isn't fixed but is not as noticeable and I am pleased with the performance and outcome by just adding an aftermarket Intake.

I killed the Drone Dragon

Here is what it took for me to get quiet power as in better sounding than stock and no drone with a load. $$$$$$ From starting at the turbo charger inlet a TAG intake air guide then as the exhaust down pipe bottoms out and turns to the rear of the truck first a modified 4" Dynotec Vortex power cone from Summit Racing catalog, (I drilled a total of 30, 5/16" well spaced extra holes to modify it for diesel soot) then an AeroTurbine, (I bought the TAG, A/ T, and resonator tip from Dave Meheen the inventer of the TAG), then 10" of 4" pipe and a 16" Borla 4" muffler, then another identical Vortex power cone apaced by 8"of 4" pipe, and then the biggest 4" magna flow muffler and finished it off with a 5" ss resonator tip. Gold plated but from the experience that I had from my 01 I knew what it would take to get exactly what I wanted. It sounds like a dual exhaust six cylinder but very subdued and quiet. very cool sounding and I love it. It wasn't cheap but nothing this good ever is. It is my original sounding design and is very free flowing while taming the resonanse monster. For $900. plus $150. labor there it is and I am happy. Now that is what it takes. I can enjoy my Infinity system, enjoy my wifes conversation while running any speed. Hey If you have ever built a real nice Harley, then this stuff ain't no big money :D Billy & Jackie Adams

Ischultz:

Were your results with the Pro-Guard similar to Goodwid's?

DPKetchum: Got your PM. Think I will tryTruck Trader. How did your hose job turn out?

After reading Goodwid's review on the Afe, I went out and installed one the next day. Am very pleased. Throttle seems more responsive and the "flat zones" in the throttle are not as noticeable. More turbo whine, which is nice, and less grunting as Goodwid states. The drone, although mine was significantly reduced after adding the 4" exhaust, appears even less now than before.

I would like to put an AFE drop in filter in to help the engine breath a little better. Has anyone heard if AFE will be making the Pro-Guard 7 in a drop-in filter. I had the AFE megacannon on my 01, but don't want to do that quite yet as we have very oversensitive dealers here that will try to blame an intake system on your malfunctioning cup holder. It just looks like the Pro-guard 7 offers much better filtration than the original.

Maybe being in the airbox it isn't going to be exposed to so many particles and is not a big concern.

What do you guys think?

Glad your high dollar fixes worked.

After installing my Jake brake the drone was less sevier than befor the install, so I concluded it was exhaust related.

My 03 was dejavoo from my 00. Altough the 00 did not have the colum rattle/ buzz the drone was reminisent.

Went to parts store and bought 6 4" muffer clamps. Then went to Lowes nf bought 6' of 1/2" angle. The angle will fit between the 2 legs of the frame hanger in front of the muffler. I started about 2" into the horizontal bend of the down pipe and went back to the muffler body.

WIZO-PRESTO

Just like my 00 no more drone, no more buzzing from the tilty flop lever and I have not heard from the door panel. I did this about 2 weeks ago and have also towed the 5th since.

This is just my experience: It may not work for you.
