guldam, Nice work & Write-up! Was your rear fuel tank hanger rusted? Not sure where you live. Mine had rusted through & broke. I told my co-worker to check his a '95 RAM 1500. It broke 2 days after I told him to check his.

Nope, no rust. This is a California truck. Only rust I've found is under the drain hole of both doors. Underneath of truck is pretty clean.

Straps are solid.

Good one, but they don't kid around with that stuff out here. At least they don't charge us to get rid of it... .

Fuel sending unit supply/return line replacement

Guldam,

SLangone's suggestion about replacing the fuel sender supply and return nipples is a good one. My '97 had supply/return lines that looked about like yours when the return line nipple failed and was streaming diesel onto the exhuast pipe... . I have no idea how long it was doing that but since the fuel gauge sender was inoperative I had no real indication that there was a problem. Around that time, when the fuel gauge sending potentiometer wipers were failing, someone here posted a well documented fix for the fuel gauge sender wiper problem and also a solution for the replacing the fuel sender plumbing with 1/8" brass plumbing and fittings. I fixed both problems for about $50 (at a time where the only place to buy a new sending unit was from Dodge for about $450+ as I recall). The gauge and sender plumbing has been working fine ever since... . probably going on 6-7 years now. If/when you drop the tank again, you may want to consider checking and/or replacing the fuel lines as well... mine started leaking a year or two after I did the sender fix. If you do much winter driving in the NE, I expect the condition of your lines will detoriate quite rapidly due to highway salt.

I have a under the counter water filter with a 5 micron filter, attached to a Harbor Freight fuel transfer pump. I just run the dirty fuel through the filter about three times and it is nice and sparkly clean, and since I also treated it with anti-fungal treatment it should be free of bugs too. A paranoid person could run it through a 1micron filter last, and really have clean fuel.

After reinstalling the tank I just pumped the now clean fuel back in the tank.

Truck is happy.

I put it in containers and bring it to an oil collection place.

My township used to take it but stopped about 3 yrs ago.

Lots of gas stations who have oil heaters would be happy for it.
