Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) dropping out of lockup

i have a 98 12valve 47re trans i have cleaned the throttle position sensor i think it helped for a couple of days but now it locks up then with in 1 to two seconds it unlocks but if i give it more throttle it stays locked,is it my throttle position sensor or my alternator giving it noise? do i need to put in a filter?how do i check so i know? rod

Check your TPS by putting a meter on it and manually opening the throttle while watching the voltage. The rise should be smooth across the travel of the TPS. If you see any spikes, drops, flat spots, jitters, etc, the TPS is worn internally.



If that looks good try wrapping tinfoil around the wire the runs from the passenger side battery across or close to the alternator. If that works its noise in the PCM lockup circuit that is the issue.

This is a very common problem with these trucks. They end up with a radio interference noise that causes the PCM to think you are stepping on and off the throttle, so it locks and unlocks the computer. There are three ways to fix it. First you can clean all the grounds. Batteries, frame, alternator. That can make it better, but not always fix it. Second is to take it to Dodge and have them perform the reflash for TSB 18-02-99 Erratic torque converter clutch operation. Again this doesnt always work. Third would be to get a APPS noise isolator. This is a filter that goes inline on your apps/tps and will filter out that noise. They are under $30 and this will fix it.

the bd filter did the trick for a awhile i was having a noise issue but it came back after about two weeks a little different so i had two problems noise and tp sensor i installed one of these and cured it! thanks guys!
