Drum Puller

Hi all, I just joined the TDR and I have to say that it's great. Lots of good info and discussions. I have a 6 horse trailer with 7200# dexter axles and I was hoping that someone might know of a make and model number for a brake drum puller. I called Dexter Axle to find out,but was informed that they do not give this out because they do not recomend which tools to use. (must be that national security thing) Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Dan

I don't know any specific models or numbers, just find any big heavy duty unit and it should work fine. The Autozones (and probably other parts places) rent tools for free. They charge the purchase price to your credit card and then reverse the charge when you return the tool.



Leave a couple of lug nuts on a little loose so the drum doesn't go flying when it breaks free.

The reason the drums wont come off on the 7200 lb. axle is because the 7200 lb. axle uses, stock from Dexter, a 2 piece oil seal instead of the one piece grease seal. The 2 piece oil bath seal uses friction to hold the inner seal in place on the spindle. You will have to use minimal force to remove the drum and after it is off, replace the 22. $ 2 piece oil seal with a 3$ one piece grease seal and the drums will pull right off.

I called Dexter regarding this and they addmitted that they use the more expensive seal even though it's not appropriate with grease, to reduce inventory. They said the 3$ greas seal works better with grease and the drums are removable without a puller.

I'm usually wrong but I think the only reason you would need a puller for this type of drum would be if the shoes are ajusted to tight or a bearing was siezed up. In other words - - if you back the shoes off/away from the drum then it should slide off the spindle with little effort.



Have you checked out the service literature on the Dexter Axle site?
