Is there a place to purchase the thin, stamped steel "insert" that fits inside the center hole of a brake drum and fits against the hub? On one of the drums I just pulled, someone has ruined the inner portion that fits against the hub and seal, almost as if they wanted to service the seals, etc. without pulling apart the hub and drum (?) The part looks like it was pryed open, then hammered back closed... it's really buggered up. The other side is fine.

Whatever the case, the dealer I'm buying my drums from said he didn't think this part was included with new drums because it appears to be a separate part. Is this the case? I'm trying to circumvent further delays with getting the job completed by taking care of these remaining issues while the drums are being shipped.

You won't find it aftermarket. You'll need to get it from the dealer. It's called a grease slinger and the part number for single rear wheels is 3496566 and for dual wheels 2952194. They do not come with new drums. Those numbers came from my factory parts manual. They should be correct, but typos happen. Have the parts guy double check the numbers so you don't get stuck with wrong parts.

OUCH!

The grease slinger is $25+ from the dealer and can't be had for a week! Wheel studs are $4+ (need 16), new backing plate bolts nearly $4 each as well (need 8) not including the nuts. I didn't even bother pricing the rest of the hardware I need... I'll just clean it up best I can and re-use it...

I need to visit a junkyard in the south. . GEEZ!!!

Are there any places online that sell this other stuff? My brake backing plate bolts are so bad I can't re-use them. Anybody have this stuff laying around that they want to sell?

Anybody have one of these grease slingers used?

I managed to find a graveyard of dodge trucks in a U-Pull it, so I've been able to find the ABS valve fitting I was needing. I pulled the drums off of two separate trucks, but they didn't have the right part... the "slinger" portion was actually part of the hub.

If anybody has one sitting around that they could sell, please let me know via personal email -- email address removed --.

Also, is it the same part number regardless of whether the truck has 3" or 2. 5" brakes?

Thanks

Todd K.

Should be the same number. The drums were the same for both size brakes. Just the shoes were narrower.

There are two drums for our trucks. one is flat to the mounting serface. The other dishes outward towards the backing plate about 3 inchs. So look at your drum mounting face and make sure if you pull a used one the drum is the same.

The dished brake drums were mostly dually's.

You need to fill in a signature so we know what type of truck and year and so on.

Are we definitely talking about the slinger that diverts oil from getting on the shoes in the event of a failing seal. Or are you looking at some brand of two piece seal for the center bore of the drum.

He wants the slinger piece. They are a slightly "press" fit inside the ID of the drum. They do as you say, prevent the leaking oil from contaminating the shoes. That doesn't say much for the manufacturer does it? They must "know" it will be leaking :) LOL
