My steering box has a fair amount of shaft movement side to side. What should I do? Buy a new/rebuilt box or a DSS? Can the DSS salvage a worn out box?
What about on a 2500 4x4 V8 truck (I have one of each)?
The DSS will help, but if the box is worn (and you can't adjust it out without it getting over sensitive) then it's time for a new box. I put a PSC box on & it seems pretty good (also installed DSS about 40K before box)
I just put a box onfrom Steer & Gear out of columbus and am very happy with it. It has been bored out and a bronze bushing put in to fix the stock box factory defect of being bored to big to begin with. I also have a DSS to complement it. Then a lukes link on the track bar. Now mytruck finally does not wander any more. I had the Dss with the old box. it helped a lot but didn't fix it. since in Oh. I'd give s & g a call (614)231-4064 (800)253-4327
I originally replaced the box with a new OEM box when I noticed all of the shaft play. I thought the shaft was cracked. This was prior to all of the discussion on the "normal" play of the boxes. Of course the new one was the same. Years laters I put on a DSS and the truck started acting like it should for the first time ever.
I would try the DSS first and even if you go to a new box later you can and should use the DSS. The DSS is much cheaper as well. ON the 4x4 you must deal with the trackbar because if it has play the DSS won't perform.
