Ford to use Damler Chrylser Diesel engines

I have a friend that is looking at a truck and it has a DT466 Diesel engine in it. Who makes it and where can I find the specs on it.

Thanks
Rick

After looking at that site, I noticed that they must have discontinued the DT360. Looks like the new Navistar school buses will be using the DT466

The DT 466 is made by international, or navistar. . depending on which day of the week it is lol. There is a DT466 and a DT466E. . the E being electronicly injected 96 and up I think. We have 4 IH trucks at work. 3 with the 466E and 1 with the old one. The old one has the most miles on it and is the most reliable by a longshot!! It has never been in the shop for a motor problem as long as I have worked there(3. 5 years) Its rated at under 200HP though. The 466E has that crapass injection like a PSD where it requires X amount of oil pressure to run the injectors. The mechanical part of the motor seems to be very stout at least. How can something that big(Dimensions wise its pretty big) tear anything up with only 210HP lol. IMO stay away from the electronic version

From my limited experience, stay away from the motor period! Great internals, strong bottom end... but the electronics are crap and no BOMBing is available! Just like the Cat 3126... the power you buy is what you'll keep... tell your buddy to keep shopping for a Cummins powered truck!

The DT466 is a gutless pig! Our little old 360 cu in motors will outpull and outlive any of the 466 models.

DT 466 GOOD! Watch the Red tractors at any Super Stock Diesel pulling event and they are almost all running a version of the Dt 466. The bottom end and block are almost bullet proof. 2000 horse power is just a start. Yes I ment 2000+ HP. The main and rod bearings should be replaced if you are uncertian of condition. Oiling is not a general problem as in some other engines. The heads are a crossflow design and that is the best. At high milage thay are prone to cylinder cavitation just like all wet liner engines. Check for a coolant filter if it has been serviced regularaly then you have a chance at a good engine. Piston and liner kits are VERY cheap (under $1000)

We have a DT466 in our IH at work. Even after the injection pump was rebuilt the thing was still a POS. I agree our little 360's have more juice.

Junk

The 97 model 4700 I drive had what IH said was a bad rear main seal. The truck was in for a PM and they pointed this small leak to us and told us what it was. Well months went by and she was kicking out about 1. 5 gallons a week!! So we had a non IH guy(IH shop to busy all the time) get ready to do a clutch and a rear main seal at 84K. He pulled the doghouse off and there was a headbolt that apeared to have NEVER been tightend from the facotry. It was pumping oil out from the head and running down the back of the block. After a few choice words IH did it under warranty due to the low mileage of the truck(truck was 3. 5 years old) Head gasket job took 3 days?? I guess the only thing they were using was a crecent wrench lol.

Not related to the motor but the ENTIRE DRIVESHAFT(s) came out from that truck going down the highway when it was a month old lol. Glad I wasn't driving it then

International has made A LOT of DT-466's. The older non- elec. versions were used in differnent sizes (414, 436 and 466 cid) in THOUSDANDS of farm tractors, combines, and other equip. Also used in over-the-road semi-tractors. Yes, the 360 is dead, Many years ago thankfully. Most places replaced by the better German designed & built 359 CID or IHC Nuess engine. If Your having electrical problems on your DT-466E, I'd find a different dealer/mechanic. The system should be trouble-free. If You need more HP than the 466 offers, they do make a 530 CID thats offered in sizes over 300 HP. I know CTD's exceed this for a short duration, but IHC rates the DT-466 at Continuous HP ratings.

I would still try to stick with the older DT466. As I mentioned above the one truck we have that is not electronic has the most miles on it and is 3 times as reliable as the two 9 month old trucks we have. Its not IHs fault my truck has no nuts lol. Its the fault of interstate Batteries for ordering a truck that they knew would wiegh in at 35K+ with a motor not strong enough for the job. IMO the 530 would have been a better choice. I am still not a fan of the HEUI(or something of that sort) injection. Rough idle when it gets close to oil change time and its EXPENSIVE to work on out of warranty.

Clark - Some of the old junkers I used to drive would vibrate apart as they sat around idling they ran so rough. My 903 powered '79 White Road Boss would embarass "Sporty Cars" back in the early 80's when I was bob-tailing around between loads. 320 HP could accelerate 14,000# pretty good up to about 60 MPH! The one vehicle that would run about as smooth as any was Your 4700's Predessor, The IHC S-2200 with the 6V-92 TTA Detroit. The one with the 290 HP Cummins would vibrate so bad You couldn't read the numbers on most of the gauges when moving. Course, the rough IL roads didn't help either.

As far as HEUI goes, In the future, unless something better or at least different is developed, I don't think there's going to be an alternative to HEUI. I know CAT's using it on quite a few of Their engines too. The control system Ford uses on the PSD is different than the one Navistar or Int'l Truck & Eng. uses. On a single axle or tandem axle truck that can gross 35K I'd have to consider a 8. 3L or a little CAT over a DT-466. Sounds Like You got a "Monday" or Friday" truck. I'd still take a Navistar or Int'l Trk & Eng. truck over any of the competiion. In a short nose conventional there's not much else to chose from now.
