About a couple of weeks ago I lost my transmission in the truck. After asking around the TDR, a couple of guys pointed me toward Greg Long at Great Lakes Diesel works.
To make a long story short - I now have a DTT transmission in the truck, and I'm very happy with it. I guess the proof will be 100,000 miles down the road, but so far I'm happy with what was done, and the quality of the product and workmanship.
But what I wanted to talk about was the help I got from Greg. When I lost the transmission, I had a picture in my mind of what the whole transmission ordeal was going to be like, and it wasn't that great.
I got ahold of Greg, and went to talk with him. He spent quite a bit of time explaining the ins and outs of the dodge transmissions, all of the design failures and manufacturing issues associated with these, and what he could do to correct these issues. It was a real low pressure, informative discussion, and I found Greg to be extremely knowledgable and amiable with respect to answering questions. I chose to have Greg do the work, and on a scale of 1 to 10, with ten being the highest level of help and service that I would have ever expected, I received a 15. I'm not going to go into details of how Greg helped me out, because I don't want people going to him expecting this type of service, but Greg really helped me out and got me out of a bind. In addition, I got exactly what I wanted out of the transmission with respect to shift points, shift feel and overall performance of the transmission. He really took the time and asked all the right questions to make sure that the transmission he built was the one I wanted, and not the one that he wanted me to have.
End point - if you're looking to have some transmission work done, I highly recommend Greg Long (TDR Member Lsfarm).
As far as the DTT product is concerned, I was impressed with the design improvements made over the stock designs (I'm an engineer so I can appreciate and understand some of the things they did). It seems that they went through every aspect of the transmission and improved every single part, rather than finding one weak link and fixing that. I'm not trying to badmouth any other products, I just have seen in the past that some companies will try to sell you a magic bullet part, without taking a look at the whole system.
Just wanted to throw this out there for anyone that's looking for transmission work-
Thanks-
Dave
