I was just reading through my latest edition of TDR. As I was reading through John Holms' positive review article on Suncoast Converters, something dawned on me. I don't believe I've ever read a review of DTT products. I mean, DR PERFORMANCE even got a review in the second time around article awhile back. If I'm wrong here, I appologize in advance but it's like, if you stay on the website, unless you've been living under a rock you know that if you're an auto guy and want the best, DTT is the way to go. However, if you didn't have a computer and were only on the paper side, you really wouldn't know them from Adam. In fact, you would probably think that BD or Suncoast were the top notch choices available. Reading the article about the Suncoast converter, I couldn't help but chuckle when they were talking about how good it was and then mentioning a mystery switch. Man, NO ONE uses those things anymore, or so I thought. I have one that only functions to keep the converter UNlocked but that's it. My second chuckle came when they were talking about transmission temp readings while locked up. I would suspect that there is very little difference between stock converters and ANYONES as far as temps when locked up. They then went on to say that characteristics between converters vary so much that they didn't want to mention temps while unlocked  Now, I would have thought that is exactly the readings that would mean something. More efficient=less heat.

So tell me, am I reading something here that ain't so or have ya'll noticed that too?

Good Eye Dan.

You're right Dan, I hadn't though about it till you mentioned it. But as popular as DTT is on the web site you would think they would have done a write up on them by now. TDR you listening.

You missed something... ... ... .....

In another thread somewhere Bill stated they offered to review his stuff, but with alot of "conditions" so Bill declined.

Dan,

When I read the review it was "ya gotta be kidding!" I think Bill mentioned the article in one of his recent posts. Basically he declined to give them a TC for free so they could install it anyway they wanted. If they wanted to check it out and run some tests they could drag their butts up to BC. Or words to that effect.

Yep

They wanted the whole 9 yards for free. I way I read the post Bill was gonna cover the transmission, install etc. But they have to cover the travel arrangements, food, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong

Why would bill have to advertise how good his stuff is when we do it for him, bottom line DTT rocks... ... ... It's killin me to wait:mad:

Advertising

Ever notice that when a product is not selling you see tons of advertising for it? I think Bill has his hands full with customers, not advertising.

Let me say this guys, i do not feel i was snubbed by John Hommes or the TDR magazine.

Believe me,i know what being snubbed is, Diesel Transmission Technology is probably the most hated company in the Diesel Industry by competitors and vendors because i dont play nice, i am not politically correct, and i am not a professional businessman, i am technician first and i tell it like i see it.

I realize every business has to make money, however, how you choose to do it it soley controlled by the owner of the company.

I have had my running battles with Banks, BD, Dr. Performance, Suncoast, Dunrite, Blue Chip,TST, JRE, you name it.

Most of us, including me learn about our dodge rams through this website, we all whether we like to admit it or not have learned from the school of hard knocks at one point or another in our lives.

Most guys think they can just bolt parts on the Dodge Ram and it will work. In some cases that is true, not so with the transmission and its components.

Roy at Mag Hytec wanted me to give the products to John for an article he was to do in the tdr magazine, as i understood it the choice was between DTT and Suncoast.

I spoke to John about the article, and the work would been done by Carson City Dodge. I, upon hearing that had to consider the following,

1st- they are a dealer for competitor,

2nd- i did not feel they were qualified to properly install our system

My feelings have not changed, i have always believed and still do that any company that still installs a torque loc , either

1- doesnt know any better or 2 doesnt care.

Either way the above mentioned caused me to set forth the following conditions if my product was to be in the article.

The conditions were this, i had to do the complete job in my shop, using my staff doing it our way.

No matter how you slice it and dice it it would have been 2 days in the shop and involve at least 2 days travel for John.

I know that a consideration that may have played a factor in the decision is John's wife was not in good health at time and travel may have been difficult.

I am not making excuses for anyone, i want you guys to fully understand what went down and maybe give you a little insight to some of the things you dont hear about after the products go in that was also a cosideration for me.

I was not going to have my stuff mixed up with BD junk(torque loc) left over from the last article John wrote about how good that stuff worked.

See i knew that one of the reasons for the change out was that the unit was slipping like a SOB, this is usually one of the end results of using the torque loc or a mystery switch that is being abused.

I also know that the article done on Dave Perea's truck by Scott Delgliesh(sp) about the Suncoast stuff was based on a tc that was given to Dave free for the article, and that article hailed the Suncoast tc to be the ticket for the Dodge Rams

What you guys dont know is that , 1 year and a little bit after the article, Dave's truck came in my shop to have the Suncoast stuff swapped out because it was slipping and "it worked like crap", and those were his words.

Guess what guys he too had a torque loc and Dave had to pay for his converter this time.

My point is , you wont see too many if any articles written about the aftermath of these products, that doesnt make for good avertising and lets face facts advertising sell products and you need advertising to sell magazines.

As i mentioned above, we are one of the most hated compaines in the diesel industry with good reason and we can live with that.

Guess what the main reason is guys,

its you.

You guys are defying all the advertising.

Now i have looked at the new tdr magazine, if you go by the advertising in the tdr magazine, our products look the worst on paper.

Last time i checked, none of you guys towed with paper or drove paper.

See every company out there knows that you guys are afraid of the lock up system in the Dodge ram, so they advertise to put you in a comfort zone, that their lockup system will handle 500 + hp , so they say dont worry about it, they've got it covered.

I am from the old school, now i know better, so i am not going to lie to you just to get the sale. What i did do was build a system to go around the Cummins power . I will tell you this,

I can handle the power of the Cummins in fluid coupling and those are not just words, you guys are living proof of that.

Whether guys choose it to believe it or not, the lock up system is still the weak link in the automatic transmssion.

20% of our business comes from guys that didnt believe that.

I have been a member of the TDR for quite a long time (and changed my handle, registration date and number of posts is misleading), and have watched how things work, just as most of us have. That said, I am wondering how much flak you'll get hit with from "them" over what you just posted... ... ...

I don't need auto work done at this time, but if I ever do, YOU will be the one to get my business. The previous posts are correct, you seem to be getting ignored, yet it sounds like you are swamped with work, and the members of the TDR think highly of your work. Good enough for me if and when the time comes.

Regards

The magazine and the website do seem to be on a sightly different tangent. I find the information posted here to more interesting from a technical viewpoint.

I've never driven or ridden in an ISB with an aftermarket torque converter other than my personal DTT (91%) setup. I DID however know exactly how I wanted my replacement converter to operate, and the DTT unit has more than lived up to my expectations of it. I might add that I had VERY HIGH expectations after reading one DTT Love Story after another posted here. ;)

I piddle around on quite a few weekend "projects" and I know what it's like to shell out the money to upgrade - only to end up wishing you just left the darn thing alone. (Current project is a Whipplecharger installation on a 5. 7 GMC Yukon - 50% finished. )

If I bought a new dually tommorow, I would upgrade with DTT engineered parts and service all over again. I'm happy.

Have Fun. :D

DTT rules. I have their products and can tell you that it is some good stuff. Giong up to BC was one of the most fun trips I have ever taken. I will for DAMN SURE be going up there next year. perhaps have Bill look the transmission over and have Piers play with the engine a bit more. I wanna go back, it's so nice up there- endless green. I want to move up there and stay.
