Gents,

I have decided against a manual conversion on my 93 and chose to rebuild the A518 Fred Swanson style. I am scheduled to have it done the first week of May. I'm going with DTT 89% TC with all of the Swansy tweaks. Can't wait to get this bad boy done! I will be doing a bunch of calculations pre-mod and after post-mod to gauge the differences (MPG, HP, TQ, etc). I also have planned 16cm housing, Bosch 190's, 4" exhaust, and HX35 all in stages. So I will post my results as the mods are being completed. If you guys want me to gauge anything during this process, please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate.

Thanks

Mike.

Sounds good, Mike. Since you brought it up, when referring to a 89 or 91% TC, does that mean that these are limited to 11 or 9% slippage? Also, if one upgrades the TC, valve body and flexplate, will there still be a "weak link" in there?

BTW, how are you liking it in the great Southwest now?

Hi tugboatphil,

You are correct with the 89/91% TC. The 91% is tighter than the 89%. The 89% will give you the best of the towing and performance worlds. It will allow just enough RPM to get you going hauling a heavy load, and keep things tight cruising at highway speeds. I was considering the 91%, but I wanted to have the best of both worlds since I tow occassionally. As far as the "weak link" goes, Fred Swanson will be able to tell you the details. I'll leave the transmission details up to him. Give him a shout at desertdieselparts.com - his number is posted on there. He is very knowledgable and loves to talk about this stuff. Give him a buzz.

My wife and I are loving the southwest right now! Ask me again in July or August. I may have a different opinion then. :)

Thanks

Mike

Aside from the TC/VB upgrades, the update kit from DTT which also includes the billet front servo/accumulator, the 518 trannies are pretty stout. No lockup means less likely to snap an input shaft.

Mike, finished up that other 93 we talked about, and the guy is picking it up Saturday. He has no idea how much different this truck is going to be. To go from bone stock to built in one shot.

This truck is plain fun to drive now.
