LSMITH, I'm not sure who one of your previous comments was aimed at however, I changed out my OE Chrysler ATF in my '98. 5 Ram before you even purchased your truck. In fact, that even pre-dated this BB, or the old CDW BB. Those few of us that were a group many years ago hung out on the Happy Campers BB.
The point is this; I have been a firm believer in quality synthetics since the mid/late '70s, having used virtually every high quality synthetic on the market. I chose the Red Line 7176 ATF+3 for my 47RE because it was specially formulated for it, it was specifically recommended to me by a Red Line Tech. after a lengthy conversation on ATFs, and I had been a satisfied (strictly) Red Line synthetic customer for the previous 9 years. I experimented with other synthetic ATF lubricants however, I decided to go back to the Red Line... even though I'm an Amsoil "dealer". I didn't follow anyone... I'm not a sheep, far from it. I'm also not generally known for following any crowd. If you knew Bill Kondolay better (or if at all), you would know the reason he does not use (or has not tried) Red Line synthetic ATF... the stuff costs $19. 00 a friggin quart (Canadian)! Although Diesel Dynamics has had excellent results with Red Line High-Temp ATF (at their locale... Las Vegas, NV. ), DTT has encountered shifting problems associated with the use of the same ATF. I should know, I either added or supplied three transmission fillings of the High-Temp in the same Ram! Bill has had a couple other customers experience much the same problems with the High-Temp. However, one NW BOMBer still has the High-Temp in his DTT transmission and loves it! Oh well, different strokes for different folks I guess.
Besides, if you purchase the Red Line ATF by the case you are generally given a price break by virtually any retailer or directly from Red Line. I think I paid $7. 00 per quart purchasing it by the case, saving me roughly $1. 00 to $1. 10 per quart. This is another point, I don't mind paying more for something I want. I would suggest that if price of the ATF is a very real issue with you or anyone else contemplating the purchase of ATF in the not so distant future, just go with a good mineral based ATF. If good is good enough and you are happy with it, great!
