LSMITH, I'm not sure who one of your previous comments was aimed at however, I changed out my OE Chrysler ATF in my '98. 5 Ram before you even purchased your truck. In fact, that even pre-dated this BB, or the old CDW BB. Those few of us that were a group many years ago hung out on the Happy Campers BB.

The point is this; I have been a firm believer in quality synthetics since the mid/late '70s, having used virtually every high quality synthetic on the market. I chose the Red Line 7176 ATF+3 for my 47RE because it was specially formulated for it, it was specifically recommended to me by a Red Line Tech. after a lengthy conversation on ATFs, and I had been a satisfied (strictly) Red Line synthetic customer for the previous 9 years. I experimented with other synthetic ATF lubricants however, I decided to go back to the Red Line... even though I'm an Amsoil "dealer". I didn't follow anyone... I'm not a sheep, far from it. I'm also not generally known for following any crowd. If you knew Bill Kondolay better (or if at all), you would know the reason he does not use (or has not tried) Red Line synthetic ATF... the stuff costs $19. 00 a friggin quart (Canadian)! Although Diesel Dynamics has had excellent results with Red Line High-Temp ATF (at their locale... Las Vegas, NV. ), DTT has encountered shifting problems associated with the use of the same ATF. I should know, I either added or supplied three transmission fillings of the High-Temp in the same Ram! Bill has had a couple other customers experience much the same problems with the High-Temp. However, one NW BOMBer still has the High-Temp in his DTT transmission and loves it! Oh well, different strokes for different folks I guess.

Besides, if you purchase the Red Line ATF by the case you are generally given a price break by virtually any retailer or directly from Red Line. I think I paid $7. 00 per quart purchasing it by the case, saving me roughly $1. 00 to $1. 10 per quart. This is another point, I don't mind paying more for something I want. I would suggest that if price of the ATF is a very real issue with you or anyone else contemplating the purchase of ATF in the not so distant future, just go with a good mineral based ATF. If good is good enough and you are happy with it, great!

John, you missed my point entirely.

Guys are spending $3 and MORE per quart for ATF +3 and +4 to get NO more protection or lubrication or anything else that plain old Dexron 3 does not supply. Spending good quality synthetic oil money on everyday dino is not smart buying. They are, IMO, wasting money. Synthetics are well worth the money, my truck uses them in all but the engine and trans.....

I thought I saw your point before, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't portrayed as some sort of "lost follower".

Anyway, every one of the numerous Red Line synthetic ATFs is about the same price. I believe the highest to the lowest equals only a dollar difference in cost per quart. In that particular case why would you not want to purchase the exact formulation that has been proven to work best with the OE or modified 47RE (IMO)?

I don't really have a problem with the Amsoil Universal ATF (which is a +4 rated ATF), I just wanted to go back to something I felt made a slightly better operational difference in my transmission. Besides, as Bill has stated numerous times, ATF+3 rated lubricants are (ultimately) better suited to transmission longevity than their +4 rated counterparts.

I do also know that a certain performance Diesel shop in my area has experimented with virtually every mineral based as well as synthetic ATF on the market and has had the best luck (in recent history) with the Mopar (mineral) ATF and the Amsoil Universal (synthetic) ATF.

Well yea or nay I decided on Havoline "Chrysler ATF +3" $2. 50 / qt.

The shifts seem ok, seems to shift crisply and without hesitation.

The 5er tow in a couple of weeks will really tell the difference.

Thanks for all the input, opened up some good questions as always.
