Lowering my W250

Improved "non-cycling" Thermostat P/N?

Talked with Bill K at DTT today about upgrading my transmission. He suggested two ways to go. The least expensive was to do the TC & VB but limit the hp icrease to 50 or so, the other was to get a 96’ core transmission and cannibalize it for better internal parts plus the TC & VB. As I understood it the first option was good to about 210hp or so, the second option would handle what the 2nd gen guys can throw at it. He said that on my 93 transmission the planetary carrier is aluminum and stands a good chance to fail above 210 hp.

What kind of HP increase can I expect from the 16cm2, PODs and pump timing?

Has anyone here done the upgrades with the 96’core parts? What do you think?

How many here are above 210 hp and still using the stock transmission?

The closest DTT installer to me is 4 hours away. Not too bad depending on how long the job takes.

My 16cm2 + pumptweaks, without the PODs, resulted in 191hp & 490 torque at the rear wheels (see sig for details on config).

I don't think the *new* A518's are available anymore; if you want the p/n to check with your stealer, email me.

Bill told me that the *new* (in 2000) A518 had a lot of mods the stock trans didn't have, but I can't comment on whether they include the planetary gear you mention.

I'm at 215hp and 567lb-ft without too much tweaking. Stock auto has been holding up just fine. I rarely tow and if I do it's an 8K boat trailer around town during the summer.

How much difference is there between crankshaft hp and RWHP?

Bill mentioned there used to be a "new" transmission availible from dodge that was very reasonable priced but is no longer availible. To by the individual upgraded parts for my transmission would cost over 4k. That's why he suggested using a 96 core transmission.

I have a 1993 W250 with a 12cm/wg with the origonal trans. but with a mod. T/C Can't remember the make. Running bigger injectors, not sure of size. (I am having a senior moment and CRS. ) The truck only has 84k and runs strong. I pull a 7500# Holiday Rambler trailer with no problems. I know in the near future I will need a new trans? And I will be talking to Bill K. I can use all the info. I can for future ref.

Thanks

John

jbolt,

I have the 96 trans update and so far so good. Bill built this transmission for 500hp and I will be having it upgraded for more hp soon as we are going to build another engine for competitive racing. Bill builds a good transmission and you have to be honest with him as to what you plan to do hp wise and how your driving habit is.

You can make over 300rwhp with that combo if you know what you are doing. You will loss about 20% with a auto from flywheel to tires.

I had approx 250rwhp with a stock transmission and broke it good. Upgrade and forget about it.

I'm going to echo what nascar mark has said.

In my case I was putting in about 230 RWHP when I had the work done and don't regret it a bit. ( I have ventured a bit higher since then, but tuned back to that 230 level).

Since each truck, engine, transmission, tc has it's own personality the losses will also vary. My guesstimate would be anywere from 15-25% loss with a stock auto depending on above personality and current wear state.

In my case, I had roughly 70K miles when the work was done. At that time I had already roached a bearing. (unkown to me at the time)

Again, in my case I had the upgraded 96 built and put in. The difference, not to mention peace of mind should I get a bit more bomb fever, is worth every cent.

I might do one or two things different knowing what I do now, but one thing I would NOT do different... . I would definitely let Bill and the guys/gals do all my work. This setup has really made this Cummins work for it's dinner, period !!

Keep in mind that I post this an end user and a darned happy one at that.

I've been towing 9600lbs all over north georgia and serval trips out west and never even had my trans fliud get dark. I drive easy when towing and dont romp on it etc. Unloaded I mash it at times but never from a total dead stop. So far (keep my fringers crossed)never a indication of a trans problem.
