has anyone looked into dual exhaust for a 12 valve? i have a 97 4x4 and was wondering about duals i went to a muffler shop that works on diesels and was told that i would loose power if i went to 3in dual exhaust does anyone have any information on this?

Hi fergie,

If you've got the stock 3" system, then it would help as the backpressure would be less. I'd qualify that assuming that you got a good Y pipe & they mandrel bend the 3". Flowmaster & others make efficient Y pipes in 3".

If you've got a 4" system, then I'd guess it would be only slightly better, & maybe not worth the $. Definately not better if they don't mandrel bend the 3" pipe or they make the Y pipe. You stand to loose too much in the regular bends as they scrunch it under 3". 3" pipe is 7. 065 in2. 2 of them would be 14. 13 in2. 4" pipe is 12. 56 in2, so you'd only be gaining a little exhaust pipe area.

I have a single three inch halfway back where it splits off to two three inch pipes out each corner. I haven't lost any power, but I can say I gained some by removing all restrictions (i. e. muffler and resonator) and opening it up a little. I had a friend who works at a muffler shop make a Y pipe out of a glass pack. He cut one end of, removed the fiberglass packing, smashed the end a little, and welded two 3' pipes to it. It looks like I have a muffler, but I don't. My suggestion is to find another muffler shop.

Whoa, hold on pardner! Don't give up on the dual exhaust idea so quick. I got my cat gutted, then they "y'ed" out of it. Had 'em run dual straights. Do you gain any hp? Naaaa, but with my new smokin' set up, it's nice to be able to look in either mirror, and see that semi look, with twin pillars of smoke cummin' out the back quarter pannels #ad
So far haven't been able to push egt's past about 650-700 post turbo, don't know if the exhaust is part of it or not, but it sure don't hurt. Did I mention how dual straights sound when you're smokin' past a chivy gasser? #ad

Jeff,

My wife and I were riding with fellow TDR member Dick Keyes and his wife in their 95 QC 2500 5 speed-same color as your truck. We were having a hard time keeping up.

You do need a Mag-Hytec rear axle cover!!

I had duals on my '98. 5. It looked and sounded awesome. Originally, I had just a regular 4" system with a muffler and 5" chrome tip. Then I went to duals with 4" x 20" chrome tips. Then I took the muffler off. Man did that thing ever dound good. #ad
Looked way cool from the back, too... Check it out at My 98. 5 With Duals

My exhaust tips are identical too yours. 5'' tips and 22'' long. Mine are farther out too the side helps keep soot from building up on the bumper.
I did have stacks. Yanked them off. Put duals back on and fixed cat.

Just do a 5inch system, sounds great and hardly any back pressure

Evan's '98 looked very nice cruising the highway with the dual 4" chrome tips out back. When pulling his truck into the dyno bay at BD last April, some of the Ford guys were admiring his duals. The exhaust tip on the driver's side is what caught the attention of the Cummins types #ad
.

The duals sounded very nice, not as loud as a straightpiped stock system, but in stereo #ad
. What surprised me when I drove his truck was how quiet his pipe-bombed system was inside the cab. I rapped it out a couple times and it wasn't much louder than stock (maybe I helped out in killing the injection pump #ad
). I'm guessing it had to do with the angle of his exhaust tips. Straight-pipe stock system is VERY loud in comparison (but sounds great!).

I plan to put a single 5" system on my new truck, then eventually split it into dual 4" just in front of the rear axle and exit at the rear. I think I'll have to go with a smaller spare to find some room for the left pipe.

Vaughn, my dual exhaust is WAY louder than the stock straight pipe. You can hear my truck from a mile away. I'm not kidding. I let people drive my truck so I can stand back and listen to it. My friend has a 97 with a straight pipe, and even he says mine is louder. I run 3" with 5" tips. It acts like megaphones to amplify the sound.

My plan is to use 4" from the turbo back to where it splits and keep the dual 3". I'm tired of spending money on the exhaust. I still have a complete setup for 4" chrome stacks laying in my garage. Didn't like the sound.

jeff , i know what you mean about the mega phone , i have a 4" with a short 5" chrome tip , running a dynomax race magnum, man is it loud , trying to find a shop that works with 4" near me is next to impossible , i want to put on duals i can get a made up "Y" at a big rig truck shop , then i just need to work on the rest , but i'm actually thinking of making up my own Y and using 3 inch over to 4" tips , but that may be defeating some of the increase i got with the 4" . at the dragstrip i saw a 15hp increase from the stock system to the 4"

Jeff,

Dual exhaust is the best. Especially if it is straight piped. Sounds like you'll have the same setup I had, with 4" that splits into dual 3" with big tips. From in the cab with the windows up, it was not too loud. But when the windows were down, it was LOUD. But hey, the louder the better. Mufflers suck! I cut my muffler off my ETH with only 150 miles on the truck. I already got a plan for future exhaust on my 2001... 4" off the HX40, then split it into dual 3" under the cab, then have BOTH come out infront of the right side wheel. Dual 4" stainless steel tips side by side. That'll look pretty menacing! #ad
No muffler, of course. Nothing but 10 feet of pipe! #ad

I have the 5 inch on my truck and I'm looking for a 7 inch tip. Anyone know where there is one at?
