dually pros and cons

i love my dually no problem except the 4. 10 gears can be annoying and the mpg will be less but they ride great and i like the way they look

I need to tell you guys... if you're having trouble parking or driving a 1 ton dually I think the Dodge might be a little too much truck for you.

Consider a Toyota Tacoma or something similar for the inexperienced driver.

A Dually is a truck used exclusively for towing & heavy loads. If you have mall issues maybe even the Tacoma is a step too big.

Dually... . just cuz the hips look AWESOME. I pull two large trailers (seprate of course) cant beat the stability of a dually. . as far as the mall goes... DONT GO!...

Hell... . malls are no problem, I just park out a ways. I wanted a DRW, but have to park in a parking garage at work. That's the ONLY reason I went with a SRW. I like my truck a lot, but every so often I have one of those "DRW" moments

All it takes is to borrow a DRW & hook it to a trailer... you'll never tow with a SRW again.

I had to borrow one this Weekend because I'm waiting for my new truck to arrive & my friends truck is SRW... it felt unsafe & unstable.

Once you drive with a dually you'll never own a SRW again. Your driving skills must improve as well because I park in parking lots too & have never seen a spot I can't fit into that I would have fit with a SRW truck... the fenders are no wider than your mirrors.

It's all preference!! I've pulled 18k cross country with a 77 short bed chevy (454/th400 and 1 ton springs) never had a problem. DRW's are more stable, but as long as you know how to drive you won't have problems pulling with a SRW.

Oh I agree & have put many miles on towing with a SRW truck but it's kind of like buying a Lazyboy... once you try it out you won't likely be sitting in the old rocking chair anymore!

Besides... why would anyone buy a Diesel truck in the first place if they weren't towing a good bit of the time?

There is absolutely no argument which is better for towing but I do agree... you could probably tow a pretty good trailer with that new 500ft/lb torque VW Touareg but I'll stick with the DRW Cummins.

If the SRW was as capable as the DRW they wouldn't make the Dually would they?

This same truck/trailer that I always tow & I'm comparing a 1993 DRW to a brand new SRW 3500.

It's not that it's dangerous... it just feels that way after towing with a Dually.

The guys that tow with DRW trucks understand what I'm saying.

Have you tried towing with one?

The improved performance outweighs the inconvenience of the extra width in my opinion.

If you use your truck as a mall cruiser & tow 1 week/year, obviously a SRW is ample.

I tow two things, about 9K with my 5th wheel trailer and about 6K on the factory hitch with a 26' boat I have never felt any stability issues. I have towed with a dually and never noticed it as making much of a difference, if the trailer is loaded right and within the capacities of the truck there should not be any issue. I would think you would have noticed a huge improvment in steering in the 3rd gen over the 1st gen, that would be more of an issue than the rear end stability to me, I have driven a few 1st gens and the steering leaves a lot to be desired.

Dual tired smoke shows with the TST look cool also. Having to pay more at the tolls stink but what stinks more was my outer wheel. Night I brought my beloved truck I flatted a skunk. If I had the old SWD I would have missed that stinky beast. Kind of takes the new truck smell away if you know what I mean.

I remember the difference it made when I went from towing a 10k+ bumper pull to a gooseneck with a srw. I had the same sensation in the towing stablity when going from a srw to a drw , even more noticable while towing heavy on a curvy down hill grade. Now I even feel even more in control with my 1st truck with a ex. brake.

My personal road to what I now tow with:

1) Gas to diesel

2) ford to dodge

3) srw - drw

4) add ex brake



Future-dodge - FL 50?????????

Love my Dually

I have had two duallies now and love em. I usually park on the Back 40 in parking lots. Them spaces are set up for small cars anyway. My only problem is that I want Dodge to supply a 4500 or a 5500. I want a bigger dually. Towing a 15000 lb fifth wheel and I am overloaded. Need a bigger Dually.

My attempt of a little humor cuz when I bought it they came out with the 600's less than a week later thus making me feel like I was driving a 'low output' engine.

I do understand the 600's are the 04. 5 but their still made in the year 2004 aren't they?
