I have just gotten a '97 Dodge Ram 3500, and was wondering how in the world I could get some bigger tires under it. I have heard of using spacers and most feel they work good, however I also have heard that they may come loose from time to time, is this true? Thanks!

ani17uk,

I don't have personal experience with spacers - decided not to use them - but I did research them. I'd recommend you call Fred Goeske, at www.wheeladapter.com. He's pretty knowledgeable about wheels, adapters, and spacers. He outlined the entire scenario that I would have needed to use them on my 2001 dually. I decided not to get any spacers, and went with a 255/85-16 tire instead. (those didn't work out either, due to balancing issues - but that's another story)

The biggest issue with spacers on the Dodge Ram is not being able to use hub-centric wheels. Ford owners have a little better luck that we do with bigger dually tires... :(

I'm not sure your 1997 has the same wheel spacing/offset that the later 2nd generation trucks have. You may or may not be able to fit the 255 width tires.

But, if you want spacers, I think Fred may be able to help. There are other companies with spacers too, so make a few inquiries.

Hope this helps,

John

FYI on a 97 you can stuff 235's under it with no ill effects. It came with 215's stock. on 2001+ you can mount 255's underneath it as it came with 235's stock.

Get some '00-'02 rims and 255's will fit. They seem to have about 3/8" more offset per wheel than the older 2nd gen's. I put 4 on to fit my 255's. I just ordered some 305/85/16's and am hoping to sqeeze them on this week.

Anyone got a pair of '00-'02 dually rims anywhere near NW Wyoming? :D
