is there spacers available that can withstand a load? i've found the ones in National tire and wheel are for "show and off road use only" they say i cant tow with these! they are also $250. 00:eek: i only need 1 inch spacers and these are 2inch. a fellow member gave me some information on spacers before(sorry i forgot your handle), but i lost the information! any ideas? thanks... james

Ricksons

I had the same problem, only with my 97. . / I wanted to go with the 235's and not rub under heavy load. (the 235's rubbed with my truck. ) I ended up with Rickson 19. 5 wheels and tires, and feel it is one of my better upgrades. I do hotshot runs for a living, and I can tell a serious difference under load. Expensive, but worth it in my opinion.

dually spacers with 255/85/16 tires ??

Anyone running 255/85/16 tires on your 4wd dually, are spacers necessary? Have 215's,looking to upgrade to 235's or 255's. I have only seen one truck with 255's, looked like no potential rubbing problem empty, but what about loaded?

rbolten;

as you can see in my sig,i do have 255-85-16's on my 99. they Do rub a bit with no load. still looking for spacers to fix the slight rub... . just ordered Alcoa 5star alloys to replace my outside steel wheels. maybe they will have a bit more offset then stock nd fix this problem:D i'll post a pic tonight of what they look like and how they rub... ... . james

pre 98's have narrower offspacing

rbolton,

If your truck is a pre 98 like mine, then you have less space between the dual wheels, which is why they came out stock at 215's. Good luck, but in my experience, even a general 235 rubbed together under load. If you don't tow or haul heavy loads, you may get by with a 235, but on my truck, I am positive I could not have gotten by with 255's load or no load. If you can find wheels from a newer truck with the backspacing to accomodate the larger 235 tire, you probably could get by with the 255. Just passing on my expensive mistakes... . I have been exactly where you are now and found it quite agrevating. Hope this info helps you.

This was a hot topic a few years ago in the TDR mag. . The critical issue is the cross section width of larger tires. As I recall, 9. 4" was the maxium cross section that could be safely used on 3500s.

Most tire manufactures give the cross section on there web sites. I did a lot of research a couple of years ago and found no 255-85s that were narrow enough for those of us with pre 2000 trucks.

However, I did find 235-85s that would work, but it should be noted that some 235s are too wide. You've just gotta check the specs of the tire you wanna run.

Good luck, Ronnie

spacers

Ramhead,

I tried to private message the info I sent you last time, but it won't go through because it says your box is full. Delete some old emails you don't need and I'll send it again.

I have installed 235/85/16 and they did very slightly rub. So little that the tires had to be seperated to see the rub. This was still no good, especially if a rock were to get lodged in at the right moment. I installed two rims on the insides off of a 2001,they have a little more offset and now i am not worried of touching even with the 5th wheel in tow. You can not have any rubbing, this can cause the tire to over heat and blow up. Dont want to have to replace one of those fenders now do you.

I run 235/85 Michelin XPS tractions and have had same size in LTX with no rubbing. 4k on bed or with loaded gooseneck. Sure would like to go taller.

I also have Michelins 235/85 x 16 LTX AT,,on my 96 duallie. No rubbin problem even towing my 28' race trailer,,,about 10,000 lbs.

They are going on 100,000 miles now,,,,wear is awsome on these things.

RAMHEAD3437

Did the Alcoa outside rims fix the spacer problem for 255/85 tires,I want to buy new 255/85 tires but I need to find a good fix for the rubbing problem first, ever find spacers that could be used for towing? Send me your pics of new wheels, Thanks.

rbolton:

the alcoas did fix the problem with the truck empty. i still needed spacers. i ended up getting them from wheel wharehouse for $90 a piece. this company said no problem with towing! i need your e-mail so i can TRY to send some pics... ... james

Can you post picts.

James, if you've got the capability, would you put pictures up. A friend made me a set of spacers in his machine shop, however after much thought on how to deal with all the issues necessary to make sure of a safe and proper installation, I've shelved them.

Just curious as to how your spacers deal with a couple issues, for instance, are they counter bored on the back side to center on the axel rather than the studs, do they use 8 longer studs, replacing the stock studs only, or do they work like big truck spacers, and use 8 additional studs in conjunction with the stockers.

One major concern was the likelyhood of longer studs shearing. If you counter sink for 8 new studs in the spacer, you don't have much room for the new studs in the small diameter spacer, it's doable, but I had concerns that have kept me from completing the installation.

Thanks, RJR

pic's

do you guys want pic's of the spacers or the wheels? i'm not too good at formatting pictures to size for this site. i'll try to get some pic's out though. the spacers are made fron billit aluminum. they have holes drilled in them for the stock studs and they have studs pressed into them.

??spacers and 255s for '99

I want 255s for my '99 ( I need new tires now), and want something safe)(I keep the cruise on 80 running out west), I'm wondering if anyone has fitted these spacers described in this thread (wheel warehouse),, has had them for awhile and likes them, or has any other alternatives (besides the 19. 5s (I can't fit them on my rear, clearance issues)).

How about the alcoas on the outside? Anyone had these on for awhile, would do it again??

Know a good place to buy the spaces??

I run 255/85's on my 3500 cab and chassis, which is set up like a 4x4. I got my spacers from NAPA for about $30 a set (needed two). That said I do run HEAVY loads 20-30k on the trailer from time to time. And I have had no problems. I pull the wheels once a month to check for ANY damage and after almost a year and 20k miles with that set up I can report that I have had absoulutely no problems whatsoever.
