Guys, Mine came stock with 215x85 michelins, was wondering how big I can go with the duals in back? I will have to stay same size around cause of 4-wheel ABS... ... . Never have to worry about this with my 2500, but dually does pull trailer nicer. r, jbone:)

If you go up in width AND you want to keep the same circumference, you'll have to go to a lower ratio sidewall.

A 235/85-16 WILL be a taller tire than a 215/85 however it will work on your dually and should not affect the ABS.

You might consider a 245/75-16. A good tire shop should beable to give you tire height and width. I run 225/75-16 Michellin XPS All Steel tires and have over an inch between the tires due to the dtiff sidewall. If you buy 'cheap' tires that are not load range E, you may not beable to go larger as you could eperience sidewall flex / bulge which will wear the two dually sidewalls under load and potentially cause a tire failure.

It would depend on the tire construction, tire brand, and the load (tongue or hitch weight) and the amount of air that you like to run in the tire.

Why do you want wider?

GOood luck;) ;)

RedRam, You mentioned a couple of my worries... don't care about height as much as I do getting more rubber on the road (width)... wife complains now about climbing up so another couple of inches won't get me in anymore trouble!!!:D r, jbone

235-85x16

I have 235x85 and I have about 1/4" between sidewalls.

They are Les swabb apt's 10ply and I change the last set out at

63,000, could have gone another 15,000 easy. This is rain tire andworks great here in the NW(in snow too). This is there premium tire and has widest footprint for this size.

If you can find your self some rims, even two to start from a 2000/2001 they have a bigger offset than the earlier models. These newer 3500 trucks come with the 235/85/16.

Be careful before buying the new dually rims for an older truck. I am am not 100% sure, but beleive that the older trucks have an 8 on 6. 5 inch bolt circle and the new trucks have an 8 on a 170 mm metric bolt circle.

I don't think that the new rims will fit on pre 2000 trucks.

I got a pair of custom spacers for mine and can go MUCH bigger now, but be careful, I have a Lance camper and now only have about 1/2 inch clearance on each side in the rear when I back under it!!!

Why bigger?

They do look a little better but most people won't notice unless you go with spacers and really big tires.

There are several trade offs with bigger, you mentioned a few.

Also consider that with 235s you won't be able to lower your rear tire pressure for a better ride (unloaded) and better wear (load dependant). You need the high pressure to keep the side walls from rubbing. With the stock size, you can drop to 45 psi unloaded to maintain ride quality. Slight rubbing is UNACCEPTABLE. It might only remove a small amount of sidewall rubber but applies forces to the tires inproperly.

When my 235s wear out, I will happily return to the stock size. Bigger might not always be better.

I'm not trying to flame anybody, just sharing my experiences.

Are the Rickson 19. 5 inch rim/tire combo a consideration? I have no problems or faults with mine and they meet all your criteria as stated... ... .

Extreme1,

I went back to 215's from the 235's that came with my used truck. Took me some time to get used to the "weenie" look. I mostly wanted to see how snow handling would be affected. No big change there, still squirrels around. Made taking off in 2nd a bit easier and mileage did not change much.

19. 5's are not in my budget at this time but I am going to look at something taller like the 7. 50/16's that some members mention from time to time.

One other thing I noticed is more wear. I have Michelin LTX M&S by the way. Too much foot in the injectors, more rotations whatever, they are not going to give me near the miles my 235's did.

I *just* mounted 235/85 BFG A/T's on my 3500 4x4 this past Saturday (the original 215/85 Michelin M/S tires went 60K and could have easily done another 5 - 10K). I have over an inch clearance between the 2 rear tires with the 235's. However, I am running Alcoa LTS alloys (steel wheel on the inside). The truck looks and rides much better, with the additional section width.

I HIGHLY recommend the BFG A/T; I've had these on at least 6 different trucks; they ride great, traction is excellent and I've never gotten less than 75K miles out of a set, with regular rotations.

All, Thanks for the good info...

Like the Ricksons, but they

are very pricey... ...

Main reason for me to go bigger

is to raise rearend ratio up into

3. 90-3. 70 area... my 2500 had 3. 54

and like the shift and added mileage

so trying to help my 4. 10 and mileage

a little..... 9000's have helped the

ride and don't think 235's would be

that much ruffer..... my 2 cents. .

Need wider fronts!

I am about to buy some new tires but need to hear from someone who has ran 245/75/16 on the rear. Was hopeing for at least 1 inch of clearence. Please let me know if they will or won't rub. I only load it up heavy about once every 2 months. Stock size is 215/75.

I am now running 35 psi in the rear to get better tread life.

I don't really want to offset my speed-o-meter was the reason to go to the 245/75/16.

My biggest problem is the front tires sink in the ground if I even think about going offroad. I don't really want to go with mixed sizes.

The newer style rims do indeed fit on the pre 2000 models. These will give an extra 1 inch of space. Keep in mind that not only do you not want them to rub but you also do not want a rock getting lodged between the tires either. As far as the 75 series goes i personally dont think that they will fit.

On my '01, I am running 255-85 Coopers that are about 33. 5" in diameter. At full inflation, there is about . 75" between the tires between with my camper on.
