I have a 96 3500 4x4 ram 5spd. . I want to swap to a single rear wheel so its the same as a 3/4 ton. . Is it just the hubs that need to be changed out or are the axle tubes diffrent lengths. . Thanks for any help. .

So i guess i stumped you guys on this. . I know the easy answer is to go measure one but i think someone might get a little ticked if they walk out in the parking lot and find me under there measureing their rear axle... If theres anyone in the north houston area that has a similar truck, 3/4 ton with the dana 80 that would mind me looking please let me know.

ok i'll try ...

you can't swap out the hubs ...

in my case i swapped a '95 cab and chassis into my '01 ...

we had a cab/chassis dually, a pickup bed dually and my '01 srw all laid out on a garage floor together ...

the cab/chassis dually was 2" narrower overall than the srw ...

the pickup bed dually was 2" wider overall than the srw ...

i ran the dually axle with a single rear wheel for about a year untill i had everything together to make a short bed dually

in other words you can run a single rear wheel but i think it will stick out 1" further per side than the front ...

you can run 2nd gen single rims with the factory hub cap ... but have to cut out the center on 3rd gen rims and hub caps ...

dually axles have different hubs than srw and you can't just swap hubs

I've looked into this too because I don't "need" a dually. Anyway, I think I found out that the cab and chassis rear ends were more narror than regular pickup dually rear ends. I think the C&C will be 1" narrower per side than the front and I think that the regular Dually rear end will be 1" wider per side than the front.

Can anyone confirm this?

I've seen tucks that were converted using the regular dually axle and you really couldn't tell that the rear was wider unless you looked close.

I think you gotta change the bed, though. If you take the dual fenders off, the wheelwells will be all hacked up.

all this about the rearends, but won't there be front spindle issues at the front to be concerned about. Brakes?

front end uses spacers ... all 2500/3500 dodge dana 60s are the same ... if you have a dually just look thru the rims and you'll see where the spacer bolts on to the stock srw lug nuts

if you are converting from srw like i did than:

last year the spacers or "hubs" were 100$ a piece from dodge ... part # 5015234AA

here is a picture of the front end spacers on ebay ... just don't tell him they're only 100$ a piece from the dealer

I found a site late last nigh that says the 3/4 and 1 ton dana 80s are the same. . Dodge Ram Dana 80 Axle Specifications Now this could be wrong though. It says they are the same except for the spindles and hubs... Can anyone verify?

spindles are part of the housing so if they're different than so are the housings, axles, hubs, brakes ... etc

center sections are the same (and everything contained therin) ... spring pad widths are the same

if they have specs than check and see what the distance is from mounting surface to mounting surface for the rims (not sure what the proper term is)
