Competition Wieght Differences..Drag Strip Research

Competition First time at the strip!

The “towing and hauling” guys have their own forum. Why don’t the “racing and rebellion” guys have theirs? :)

I got surprised by another hopped up Cummins today.

I was talking diesel performance with a friend of mine when this ’96 3500 5-spd pulls up. He had heard about me and wanted to race. Although I never race, I couldn’t back down in front of my friend so I agreed.

I looked at his truck before our encounter and immediately noticed the BANKS twin ram intake. He said it had a banks system on it and that is how he bought it. He didn’t know what a camplate was, but did know about adjusting the starwheel for more or less smoke and responsiveness. He said he could bury his EGT gauge and that shocked me. I doubt Gale Banks would sell a product that could bury the EGT gauge, so I looked at the motor one more time. I noticed his AFC housing had three different types of screws in it, so I’m sure the camplate had been moved or modified a few times.

We drive out to the drag strip and stage. I arm the propane system, slip it into four wheel drive and start trying to spool up the HX-40. We give each other the nod a few times and then he dumps his clutch. I waited for his movement and then let her rip. I saw him grab second (yes, second) and then I was by him. I pulled about four lengths ahead in a ¼ mile then slowed to a stop. He turned around and said he wanted to run them again but with the propane turned off this time. I agreed.

This time I forgot to engage four wheel drive, and I didn’t spool the HX-40 enough to even spin a tire. He launched so hard that I thought he would pull the front tires off the ground. Each time he grabbed another gear, his front end bounced what seemed like a foot. My HX-40 wasn’t spooled up until my 1-2 shift point and he was already in 3rd gear. We ran side by side through his first four gears with me having ½ of a truck length on him. When he got into 5th gear, he actually started to catch and pass me! I was so shocked that I reached up and flipped on the propane again to keep him from beating me.

I realize that 5-spds have a lower speeded OD gear than my auto so he had a gearing advantage in OD, and I’m running an unlocked torque converter, but I didn’t think he should be close to me.

He slipped his brand new Dual Friction Centerforce clutch so badly that I could smell it in my truck.

He told me later that he never let off the throttle during the race. :) He had a Bank’s Powerpack which gives him the 14cm exhaust housing. He also had enough camplate to bury his pyro and push 38 psi of boost.

It looks like I’ll be needing that big P7100 after all. This was too close of a call for me.

sounds like fun... also sounds like we got another pissed centerforce customer.

Im going to the Woodlands in a few months... lets race!

I, for one, am all for a 'racing' forum... . I don't tow (much... ) and I think it would be really cool for a forum dedicated to us nutters out there that just want to go fast.

As for the getting beat thing... ... I used to win a few races with my old truck... . but this thing has no HP... . now all I can do is wait for the hills and surprise people when my truck doesn't slow down when climbing the hills and that it can actually increase speed on hills... . :D

I need to unleash the fury on this thing... ... SOON!

Matt

Lets do the racing forum!!! I am all for it. I think that it would get a lot of attention, but I think that there should be seperate forums for the 12v and 24v engines since there are so many different mods that are exclusive to each. LETS GET IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Chris,

You've got my adrenaline going:D I'm ready to race! I guess it's a good thing you got your Strickland Research cam plate back:D :D I haven't been back out to run the 1/4 again... . I've been having alternator problems. The main difference with a lot of these people is that they have no idea how there truck is producing the hp. Some one simply puts a part on for them and they know that it's fast, and that's fine for some people... . but not for me. I am never impressed with a person who has a fast truck but doesn't know why it's fast. I can't believe you cheated:D You've got me rollin' here! I don't blame you, I would have done the same thing, I WILL NOT BE BEAT:D :D Ah heck... . someday I'm going to have to eat those words!

I am all for the racing forum.

In the ever so graceful words of Mills Lane..... LET'S GET IT ON!

I'm all for a racing forum... 1/4 mile... . 'other' racing... pulling... backyard mud drags... . etc.

Matt

Initially, I was joking about the racing forum because I didn't know the proper place to post. But there seems to be some interest.

cumminsgetme,

I think you need to take 3 brass pucks out of your clutch and practice those 3rd gear launches we talked about. :) He's willing to race you any day of the week. I don't know if a 15. 09 is going to cut it. But I know that TST #4 seems to work better for you than it did for me.

He heard my little 160 hp P-pump popping when I passed him at 3200 rpm and that's when he thought I turned the propane on. :)

I agree with you about how we like to know what we've done to our trucks, but that might change when another truck starts to pull away from you. :)

The way I see it, I'm no Piers or Joe Donnelly, so I'm always willing to learn. Even if I have to learn from some kid with no idea.

I'm been thinking about this for the last 24 hours. I'm running more camplate than a TST #4. I'm running more governor spring preload than Pier's 3800 rpm kit. I'm also running an HX-40 and 370 hp injectors.

And this guy, started to pull away from me on the top end because his 215hp P-pump was simply putting more fuel into the combustion chamber than my 160 hp pump was.

That's the lesson as I see it.

I wonder when Piers is leaving for Texas? Maybe I'll ask him to sneak a few 'spare' parts across the border. :)

Hey strick-9, how does that hx-40 work with the 91% tc? What elevation do you live at? Do you smoke out the intersection when you leave? I am considering getting one to reduce my rediculous egts and help with the top end power. What do you think of it? Thanks much.

CAnderson,

You can do a search for my post "not impressed with HX-40". It was in the last two weeks.

I live near sea level. My personal opinion is that the 91% DTT TC and the HX-40 / 16 are not a good combo to run together. Before the HX-40 I had my AFC tuned for nearly no smoke until about 30 psi boost. I like to be able to press the accelerator and force my transmission to downshift without covering up nearby cars. After installing the HX-40, I HAD to increase low end fueling to maintain some sort of driveablity.

The response of the HX-40/16 is slightly better than my stock HX-35/12 with one of the intake horn bolts removed. Don't ask how I know that. :)

I still haven't noticed ANY EGT decrease with the HX-40. My last 1/4 mile pass netted 1599°F on my SPA digital gauge. My truck didn't show any huge top end power gains either.

Joe D. recommends the 18. 5 housing if you want EGT reduction.

I know it sounds like I'm running this turbo into the ground. I'm not trying to. I'm not going to take it off and replace the stock turbo. There are advantages. The advantages are subtle though.

As you get more power, each horsepower costs much more than the last one. This is the worst benefit per dollar that I've spent on my truck.

-Chris

I will add my story to the dueling Dodges FWIW: Went to the strip last night for the first time ever (Edmore, MI). Friend’s truck was a 99 quad, 4x4, 5spd, 275 RV and 3 way adjustable Edge?? My truck is a 95 4x4 auto STD cab (with the wife next to me), tst210/550, 4" exhaust (home made), BD injects, and stock torque converter with over 202K. My best run was 16. 74@83. 44, his 17. ??@85. ??. My weight was 6750 and his, he figured was around 7200Lbs.

When I did the calculations for HP, I came up with any where from 281 based on ET too 305 rwhp based on MPH (83 MPH on all three runs). I was impressed with the HP from minimal amount money.

In his defense, he mentioned that his clutch was slipping. I think if he gets that taken care of, it will be closer next time???

I like the idea of a racing forum. Went to E-town last weekend for the Diesel Truckin' Nats. Had a blast, went a few rounds in eliminations, only to beat myself by not changing my dial in far enough (thats racing). Congrats to the dude in the bright yellow dually for a . 040sec. win though, that was a great race!!!!!!!!!!!

He was running out of the Auto-Wurks stable. Thanks JRE for the power!!

Chris, the reason the HX40 seems sluggish is that you NEED MORE FUEL :D :D

If you're old enough, get a 215 hp pump with the gov springs, "proper" torque plate, AFC spring, a little "magic" massaging, and the "right" timing. I know Cumminsgetme is working hard to get older  so he can get a 215 pump that is on the shelf waiting.

I know I need a bigger pump. Or a pump cam with a shorter injection duration.

I've got NEARLY everything you mention.

More camplate than a TST #4, Moving my camplate forward adds no topend fueling. It just increases the fueling on the low end. :)

I have Pier's gov spring kit, but I shimmed the inner spring about . 060 to further prevent defueling.

My timing is 19-19. 5°.

The only thing I don't have yet is the magic massaging. :)

Cord and I are hard at work on that part. :)

I'll buy a bigger pump in due time, but what fun would that be?

A bigger pump isn't going to stop my HP quest. I might as well learn with this little pump than risk my EXPENSIVE pump, eh?

-Chris

Joe,

I hope your taking good care of her. I knew I should have left you an extra $100 to ensure proper care:D

Chris,

I'm seriously thinking about pulling my pump at the rally. If we jerk it off friday when we get there that will give us all day and night to play with it. Then I can get up early saturday morning and put it back on. I just want to be sure that I don't miss any events... ... I think friday is going to be a little slower, might be a good time to do it. I have got to get a clear look at EVERYTHING in this pump:D :D Do you have a Dremmel? I'm thinking about making some plates to bring with us..... maybe that will occupy our time at night..... surely grinding plates will help keep me from gettting homesick:D :D

I have a Dremel with the flexible shaft... . works great for polishing intakes and mild port work.

I'm hoping to put it to good use on the CTD once I start BOMBing my pump.....

Matt

petition the "suggestions" forum

I believe there is a suggestions forum at the bottom of the roundtable. Everyone pack the forum with posts and replies for wanting a racing forum. Power of the people!!!

Talking about major fueling and horsepower, has anyone seen the "Shockwave" truck with three jet engines? I got to see it work up close at a local air show a few weeks back. WOW!!!

Nuff said. :D
